I've got an HD681 and I really like it.

There's a profile for it in Tonebooster's Morphit, which really improves it, in my opinion (I just use it to make it flatter, not to match other headphones).

You can't beat it for the price.

I have few pairs of 668b's. They're fine.

    665's. Not comfortable. Adequate.

662 EVO's are very strange. The cable was not acoustically isolated. So you have to wrap it around the frame to make them quiet. Didn't like the sound or feel either. But then I ghetto modded them (bend the frame to make them loose enough to fit the extra pair of pads on top of the factory installed pads (or you could just get a really thick third party pads instead)) and now suddenly with extra padding further away from my ears they sound and feel really fucking amazing. But really ghetto and flimsy. But still, they sound and feel really really really good 'modded'.

  5. That's the key. If you can rebalance a known model, your cans will do just nicely.

In my studio I use AKG 240's but for flying I got a pair of Apex HP96 (reg. 60 Cdn, 20 on an insider deal at my music store). Accurate sound, lightweight and comfortable for hours on your ears. I used them as sound isolators on a return flight to Amsterdam when sleeping.

Sweet! Whats the sound stage like?? What don't you like about them??

I've used the AKG 240's before and liked it! But I also felt like there was something lacking?? I remember them sounding kinda dry, I could be totally wrong though haha!

I recently bought the Fostex TR-90 (semi open) and I like them alot. Very nice and clear sound.

But the original ear pads were kind of uncomfortable so I also bought the Shure HPAEC1540 Ear Pads

Which increased the wearing comfort and also the sound quality quite a bit.

I have HD681 Evo, it is nice sound for this price, but bassfrequenzy is some too high for Mixing or Mastering, and i have Samson SR850 too
it's not the same like HD 681 evo in Sound, i find Sound from Samson SR850 is more balanced.

I have a Samson SR850 (semi-open, that basically is the same as the Superlux HD681 - evo is just a restyling) and a SR950 (closed).
    Quite remarkable both.
The driver is the same used in some higher price AKG headphones.
I think you won't be disappointed (and you couldn't get more for that price in anyway).
    To me is a GO.

+ Superlux HD 681 using them for last 4-5 years almost. Great cans for the price. I compared them to AKG K240 as well and didn't notice much radical difference. And with Toneboosters Morphit it would be even flatter and accurate as mentioned above. You shouldn't go wrong if you decide to get a pair. At the worst, they can serve as trusty backup to better headphones down the line too.

I've heard Samson SR850's and they do sound too bright, but on the other hand I find K240's a bit too bright, either. I think they are great value for money anyway, and they're what I would suggest to people on a budget.

However, I think great headphones are not really that expensive, and it's worth saving up to buy those instead, because when you're mixing, headphones are also a necessary reference for some things, so better to get good ones. It's not like we're talking about $2000 difference or more, like the difference between great and excellent studio monitors can be.

Of course, it depends a lot on how serious you are about mixing with headphones.

No, it's not, but the HD681 series copies the design of the K 240.

They are still quite ok for their price. I wouldn't get the normal 681 (= Presonus HD7 obviously), as they are too "hi-fi" and also too harsh in the higher frequencies. The HD681 Evo reduces the latter with an additional felt pad. The HD681B (B is supposedly for balanced) is more neutral and thus could be better for music production. Its signature is similar to AKG's K 240.
