I recently used Mixcraft 8 and it was pretty impressive. One thing that was pretty useful was Separated automation track. There is a button for it and once you click it, it shows another track below the original track. Even if you make automation there, it doesn't affect the mixer. Which means you can control the volume without hassle.

Everytime I make automation in Studio One, I have to add a bus channel to control the volume. It makes the mix console messy.

I am wondering if Studio One has a function to separate the automation from the original track like Mixcraft which I may have missed.

I use Mixcraft, it is a Godfather like Jimmy in Goodfellas In the background but doing the business without the heat. Those who know know. It can crash occassionally. But around has great Mixcraft plugins, easy to use and many pro tool users love it. The automation lane is easy and the midi control to use with controllers is great. Mixcraft University has alot of support.

    The drawbacks of Mixcraft are:

    1) Too heavy. It takes lots of time to scan VST.
    2) Crashes pretty often.
    3) Some VSTs don't work properly.
    4) Some VSTs are not supported.

Other than that, it is pretty easy to use and intuitive. Honestly, it is easier than Studio One.

It's pretty impressive too. Actually, I have been interested in Reaper, but when I look around, I was overwhelmed by the option menu. It was too much for me. Plus, the interface is too simple, so I had to check the buttons carefully. Although I don't have fancy eyes, but it is too simple.
For example, if you had no idea what arm means on DAW, you would think about it for a while. Even a simple red circle button can help to recognize it easier.
However, I am still interested in it and will try it when I am free.

Yes, there is a feature. It's called show automation lanes.

I don't understand exactly your problem. It's when you make an automation for the level of a track? In this case put a VCA on this track,it's usefull for making volume automations;automate the VCA.

If I understand you correctly this
    and this
    are two different things.
The first is just an extra row/track (a matter of displaying), the second is something like a trim function with which you can change the volume without the fader being moved. Like Peter Klausener both is possible in REAPER (though I didn't watch the vid, but know from experience).

How to have it show up? I don't see anything on the right click menu.

That icon should appear on every track and clicking it will expand the automation lanes(in S1 it's called envelopes) if there is any.

I started my journey with Mixcraft. It is very intuitive. However, the colors and design are old and sluggish.
    Things I liked about it:
    1. Simple track multi-track recording design, which works for a musician that wants to record. (vs FL Studio and Ableton Live junk-ish GUI)
    2. recording stuff over each other and very easy comping
    3. embedded music notation
    4. possibility to load vsti and vst and record audio on a track!
    5. its looping features.
Use the Mixtool plugin, it has a gain nub to automate the gain.

I am not sure if we are in the same planet, but there is no automation lane nor envelopes.

When you want automate any parameter in S1 it's ultra simple:
_First,move any knob on your synth
_Then drag the hand that show the parameter you moved on your synth on the top left corner of S1,under "Files" and "Edit",and drop it on your midi track.
_Make the same thing again with another parameter you want to automate.S1 will show this new automation on your previous automation by default.

_And then right click on your midi track and click on the first option,"expand envelopes".
