There are surely other tools you could use to format bigger FAT32 partitions, even from Windows, but I settled for and love GParted.

 

Well, I would say only if your bottleneck is the disk subsystem. While FAT32 is indeed faster than NTFS the limitations can bother you at an unexpected moment. NTFS also allows bigger cluster size, for instance.

nkx and nks containers are limited to 2GB but this is the old DVD limit, not a hard disk one.

ExFat is the other one, only makes sense if you want native support from both Windows and Mac.

Kontakt libraries never contain files bigger than 2GB [losslessly compressed parts], indeed. But since there can be millions of samples I wouldn't advise using bigger cluster sizes than 4KB. So it depends on the libraries, or rather amount of files in these libraries.

Now I remembered another FAT32 drawback: you can't boot Windows from it with anything newer than Win98. But that's not such a big problem, eh?

Thanks, perhaps too serious for me but I like it. Although is one of the nice things of the anonymous internet, between my nick and old avatar (the anime one) people think I'm 20 years younger. I prefer to keep it 10 years younger lol, there's a sweet spot in everything

 

There is a little neat trick you could use to make the amount of files on the partition drastically smaller. ISO the folders with samples and mount them when you want to use them. It also makes defragmenting the drive much faster. I use WinCDEmu for mounting ISOs. It's a little, free, portable proggie.

 

Very interesting, I do something similar.
I use winrar not only to compress but to pack (many times without compression) everything that has a lot of small files and doesn't need writing on my HDDs. In my case it's even more important since I use RAID0 2xSeagate drives. Seagate's are fast but even for HDDs have high access times.

Like you say it helps with fragmentation and consequent speed. I also do it to enforce security (rar files with password and 3% of recovery record) and antivirus scanning times. Though the latter is a dangerous thing if you don't scan first lol

That's a much neater trick, Xupito. I remember you mentioning it in the other thread. You use WinMount to mount compressed files, right? Do you know of any other programs that can mount compressed RARs? I'm not saying I'm too lazy to investigate it. I like small, possibly portable, non-resident programs. I've never use WinMount. Well, so far.

That's really, really neat. When you RAR those sample folders you could gain up to 50% of space. Plus defragmentation takes soooo much less time. I'm definitely going to check it out.

ok i do iso's with samples stuff..i allready began to rar everthing what was just extracted in the past...
rar copy faster too...maybe its also saver for enduring vst set up files and stuff ?

It can mount AKAI ISOs, then you use CDXtract to convert the samples to WAV.

But I must say this WinMount looks terrific, too! Usable even with W2K and XP. ;)
