I'd be also interested in finding good 2.5" above 1TB. Currently running on Firecuda 2TB, but there isn't much competition, which isn't ideal

 

In music applications you should have a minimum of 7,200 rpm. Cache isn’t going to directly equate to faster drive performance on single tasks. With that said, if you can get a 10, 000rpm with 128 or 256 cache you would be very happy. Also, avoid anything above 4TB as their failure rate is much higher than anything below it. However, there seems to be a reliability improvement in large drives released in last 2 years.

3 tb is my limit...better have 3 times 1tb ssd...but thats 330 bucks

If you want to save money on high capacity, I would buy a external drive and shuck them. I just purchased a 10tb wd elements for $159 which should have a 10tb white label which is the same as the wd reds.

Unless it's a enterprise Nas drive. Nas drives are built differently than consumer drive keeping constant data transfer in mind.

 

Benefits are huge storage. Built better as they have data centers in mind so to speak they are more reliable (in theory) with less failure. Plus some Nas drives come with longer warranty

It's not SSHD, but for 2.5" it has unusually large cache, which is good. But I'm bit worried about the data density.

 

I would suggest get an external and shuck. They typically use Nas drives as they are more reliable in addition far cheaper up to 50% than a bare drive and also a good one at that. Only down side is they will be 5400 rpm but if it's only for data hoarding, it should be well worth it.

I had some data, which I am trying to find, that showed the failure rate for each major manufacturers' hard drives. If my memory serves me well, the new hard drives were more prone to failure in their 3 months of usage, and specially during the first week, than after the first year. And after the second year the failure rates increased across the board. That is why it is important a "burn-in" period used to uncover a defective drives.

 

Agreed. This should be standard practice for any drive.

 

FYI I have 3 of those exact HGST ( Now Western Digital) 3tb from Amazon for data and backups. They work great for me but you should be very careful with refurbished drives. Making sure you test the hell out of those things.

 

Another thing to keep in mind when formatting your data hard drive. Dont use the default AUS "Allocation Unit Size" which in Windows NTFS is 4096 bytes. Use instead the bigger option, generally 64k. Why? Fewer blocks to keep track of and less fragmentation.

 

Prices have come down so much that buying a refurbished hard drive should be a last option.

I think by "data" he is referring to libraries and samples. As a back up a 5,400 rpm will suffice BUT if he plans to use those in his rig, he needs to go with at least 7,200 rpm.
