something around rock/metal/jazz/dnb - obviously depends on how it needs to blend with other instruments

According to me the best transient designer is the Flux:: Bittersweet Pro,it's ultra precise for both transient and sustain with its envelope, and it's frequency dependant (but not multiband like iZotope Neutron's transient designer) :

been using KICK2 by SA, the kick is pretty much ready to use, no need for additional processing.

    Good point

Best advice in the video for me personally, is this:

Jam, play around, and start mixing the other day.
Cause i do sounddesign & mixing alltogether actually, you know, testing new plugins and stuff, but i dont even start arranging things! Best advice at least for me

I haven't seen this here, something I've learnt from groove boxes.

They always have two bass drums , two snares and two open hats (close hats) channels, so you can alternate between them depending on the mood of the song or mix them , one as the main character and second adds details.

man those old metalheads and moving shadow tunes bring back memories..i can almost feel the drugs in my system when i listen to those tracks.lol. pretty sure Rob Playford was the main engineer and mastering guy for those labels. he had his hand in alot of those old labels and was a genius.

i make only dnb, so my kicks are void of much low end content under 150hz. but a trick ive used for 20 years or so is to tune my kick to the root bass note, that way when the kick hits, the bassline has the low end content, and it makes it sound like the kick is full. and when they are in tune,it thumps nice in the chest. of course bass notes change, but as long as the kick and bass are the same pitch MOST of the time, and especially on the drop, where it matters most, you are good.

tip; dont spend much time on drums when STARTING a track. just start with good samples and wait to process them until you have your bass and leads and pads in order. you cant process drums correctly before hearing them in the entire mix,its just wasted time. And wasted time is a producers worst enemy. it can kill the vibe you were trying to create and deplete all your creative energy you had stored for the session.

oh yeah, also ill let the cat out of the bag. if you dont have the entire Paul Nice break collection, do yourself a favor and get it.

and one more thing... a secret ive never shared...get yourself airwindows ToTape5 and use the SOFTER slider to take the transient OUT ...yes remove the transient a bit. i know this sounds backwards, but its how you can get the much saught after ROUNDED/soft but punchy drum sound...then use the fatter slider to bring mix the drum back in. this can only be done when mixing into the full track tho! dont try this with your drums solod.

That sounds pretty interesting!! Thx for that move!!
Those breaks, are normal speeded originals or uptempo pitched breakbeats?
Ssite vol 1-5 is still on, ill check for those, only got the zero g jungle warfare in the 90‘s, did some d&b joints back then!

In that tom hades masterclass i posted before he shared something i use regularly since then: put izotope trash 2 on kick channel, use it in multiband mode, put tape saturation on liw & mid freq, and amp drainer on high freq content, really works wonders on kicks, no distortion, adds clarity & punch, very nice saturation!!! Highly recommended
