3k Computer and still dropouts and cpu Spikes - what am I Missing?

    To me, that's
    -a motherboard problem. Install latest drivers
    - firmware problem. Check if latest is installed

    - a disk /driver problem. Windows installs the default disk.inf driver for all drivers. Maybe some hard drives/ssds require some other drivers
    - some bad bios settings. Check them.
    - is the cpu overclocked ? Tried to load a default ram profile ?
    - in the bios, disable ALL the crap that isn't needed/used, like parallel ports, com ports, integrated audio cards, integrated graphic out, disable usb 1 legacy support, if you have an integrated graphic chip, disable it, as the system will allocate 64-xxx ram to it...
    Sata ports configuration ok ?
    Some raid activated ?

    Try to disconnect your 2 ssd drives, so only the main/Os is connected to the motherboard.

    Device manager under windows. Are there any undetected/error devices, for which Windows can't install a driver ? It could be a system driver missing.
    What does the events manager say ? Any recurring errors ?

    Have you tried creating a new admin user, and logging i , and see if the same issues are present ?

    btw, maybe you wanted silence, but... 2 ssd 2tb drives must have taken at least 25% of the entire budget.
    I would have grabbed 2x 1Tb, wayyyy cheaper, along a 4tb western RED drive. With 125mb/s read/write, you could easily store some disc images, backup some backups folders from the 2 ssd drives... and STILL have a tonnn of space to store other crap.

    have you tried to install a asio4all driver ? Just to bypass the current audio card driver.. to see what happens.

    also, with 32gb of ram AND a cpu beast with plenty of cores, there are 0 reasons not to
    - install vmware, and quickly create some images. There are pre-made vmware images on the web, ready to be open, linux.. windows...
    in just 20 minutes, you can have a windows 8 image ready to start.. where you can install your audio card, a few daws, a few plugins... and SEE how things are working, under win 8/8.1... no need to activate those images and buy licenses, you are just testing the os.. you can download a win disk from Internet, that doesnt automatically register windows on a distant pirate licensing server. You JUST need
    a full install disc, to run as a demo

    Another thing. With 32gb ram, you should grab 3 or 4 gb, and create a ramdrive... like a physical disc.. but stored on ram, which its status can be stored on the physical hard-drive. Ram is wayyyy faster than any ssd drive,m.2... if you need a 'temp' disc, for photoshop, etc, everything will be done on that ram drive... wayyy faster. You can, eg, use that ram drive as internet explorer/mozilka/chrome TEMP drive.

    - plus hundreds other places to search for your errors. If i was having such issues, yes, it could be the audio driver. .. but it looks like a global performance issue... and that's why i would search the firmware, motherboard, drives...

    @ThugLife Its a pleasure to assist such a plesant person as yourself, I wish you luck in your endvours. Remember I have much the same PC and mines rock solid at 4.8 with a latency of 96 samples. You can do it but take your time. :wink:

    What the hell? If someone has 80 degrees of CPU with speedstep turned off it means someone has a big problem with cooling system (at processor or in whole PC). Sorry, I have 6 cores (12 threads) Intel running from about 5 years and it still works without no problem and with max 50 degrees. Im using it for Ableton and Adobe After Effects and it works like a charm.

    SPEEDSTEP technology was created for dynamic cutting working processor frequency to get lower energy consumption (and it is connected with heat ofcourse). Try to find more about and dont worry - If You have a good cooling system (I have 2 collers at processor) like this one https://noctua.at/en/products/cpu-cooler-retail/nh-u9-tr4-sp3 and good air flow via PC - nothing wrong can happen.

    I don't want to seem like that annoying reaper guy lol, but I use REAEPER with >100 tracks (at least 4 serum instances), some lin phase eqs, x2 avenger , x2 spire, x2/ 3 omnisphere instances and some other fx with 48k, 768/ 1024 samples and it runs fine. I try the same with Ableton/ DP9 /Bitwig/Sam and the projects may freeze before strarting or I would need to freeze a ton of tracks.

    PC SPECS: I7 7700, 12 gb RAM, win10, Kingston SSD, no graphic card
    Try to switch to REAPER the SWS extensions help you a lot, the GUI looks bad but with the theme of your preference it may be fine.

    I use the drivers of my Steinberg UR12 interface.

    Looking forward for the result, but I will strongly suggest you also do the bios update at the same time. A bios update will often fix memory, cpu and port errors, and best of all optimize your bios. Update of the bios is the single most important thing you can do for the motherboard to work properly. If you update your bios now you would probably never have to do it again. That being said your bios is from 2018/07/13 which is of course not that old, but there has been two updates since then.

    This is going to be a lil offtopic, but i want to point one thing out before going any further

    Thanks to all of you, really, i really didn't mean to blast this forum for days and cost you so much time. i really didn't think of so much support, but let me take this opportunity to point one thing out.

    After Topics like Audiosex has become Vanilla, People complaining about all the interesting people with great knowledge leaving audiosex and so on, I really want ya'll to look at this thread.
    7 pages already.

    Where is Olymoon? Not one single Warning. You all spread love and great advice and all the knowledge people complained has gone. No one getting offended. I'm really sorry for those who recently left for those reasons.

    We are having so many people spending hours of hours into looking into ONE SINGLE person's problem... people disagree, maybe argue, but you all do it on a polite and respectful base.

    I'm thinking about renaming the thread to something like Audio Prodcution System Optimization Thread since there are so many good ideas that would not only help me. that's what i mean by i opened this thread, you all made it.

    I don't want to say look how great my thread turned out to be, I just like to point out how great YOU ALL MADE IT.

    I will now go on with everything, sorry for the delay. Starting PC NOW

    hi there. great thread. I'm AMD setup, wondering if the equivalent of C-states of Intel was to be disabled here, too.

    here is my CPU configuration in BIOS:

    it took me so Long because my Internet is blocked by Firewall. couldnt find what it was, so after a while i set off Firewall, went online, downloaded Drivers. wanted to start with the vga Driver as it is the first in your screen capture but its telling me i dont fit the System requirements. i will now continue with the others but this is starting to get annoying^^

    Now I Went through the update process except for the vga Driver which still tells me System doesnt Match requirements. Went back to uefi bios, loaded optimized default settings and did following tweaks

    And i'm not sure what to do Power Mode off or should I leave it on? Do I have cooling problems? I left it still enabled for now but when you say turn it off, i'll do so. For now I only found this option to enable or disable but if I should decrease zhe multiplier, I will look into that

    I tried now but I could not because the only graphics Card listed was my amd one but i follow your second Suggestion now. already downloaded it, but waited for the install because i tested a few other Things first.
    I did what you told me to and went for the win 10 repair update, went all fine.
    I also took the Risk and switched to AHCI, disabled Power Mode, so CPU should not be overclocked anymore and disabled Hyperthreading. I hope this is good. If not i will enable it again.

    Then I did another Latencymon run

    When you change settings in bios be sure to write down what changes you make. Did you update the bios too? If so I would try with the factory settings in bios first. Then test your system with DAW and latencymon. If your system is good, then maybe do light overclocking in bios, just use the automatic bios overclocking very easy with ASUS. Your CPU shows under pair on benchmark because 8700k 3,70 GHz is made for overclocking and if you overclock it to around 4,20 GHz you gonna do well on the benchmark test. You could of course go all the way up to 4,7 GHz but then your system gonna be unstable.

    That Intel graphic card driver I posted is for you Internal Graphic card that is on your CPU. The Internal Graphic is just so you have a backup if your AMD card fail or something like that.
    By the way you probably already have the Internal Graphic card installed. The easiest way to update it is do go to device manager and show hidden devices, right click on Intel Graphics to update driver and do a automatic search for update:

    thanks mate. tried that also now, but still, the only device showing up is the amd gfx card.

    And yes, by having internet connection i thought i'll do it all. the only thing i did was i made the decision to also do the media creation tool thing, after i did all the asus updates. so yes, mobo is also up to date now. I went to Bios, set it to default and did the tweaks mentioned above, the ones paul pi suggested. also turned off power mode there and hyperthreading. made pictures of all changes.
    so would you recommend to go back and set it to default again without any tweaks? I think this will Enable power mode/unclocking automatically again, as it was enabled when i went to default settings.
    I still haven't looked into a tutorial about overclocking, so the only things i know at the moment are the ones ya'll taught me. and like i said i didn't touch overclocking for myself and it seems to be enabled when i load defaults. on the right side of the bios it says 37x, not 45x which is something i don't understand too, since ya'll said this value is too high and at 45x. I will go for a tutorial but i think that's something i'm gonna delay since there is so much to do still.

    sorry it took me so long to give you an answer to this comment, as i thought this is another comment of big value, when i read this. I'd really apologize for that, but if i answered every single question yesterday, i would have done nothing else.

    first point is now done, all asus drivers are up to date now except for the vga driver which i could not install so far. as for the firmware update it said this was included in the bios update i did yesterday.

    i'm afraid i dont know how to look into the disk drivers like you say but one thing i can say is that i installed the drivers for my SSDs but maybe i should check if there are updates to make too?

    CPU was overclocked, i now turned power mode in bios off, at least for the testing purposes. but i have to watch a few tutorials first because i don't really have a clue what i'm doing.

    After the Asus updates, i loaded default bios settings and did the tweaks mentioned in the other post. otherwise power mode would still be enabled.
    Yesterday, i switched from intel rst raid to AHCI if that's what you asked about raid.

    I could disconnect both 860 EVOs but then i would not be able to push my pc that far anymore because these drives are what i exclusively use for my libraries and any other Audio related Files like other sound content.

    Checked the device manager, there are no errors displayed, and all drivers seem to be working fine. also i clicked on about 20 to 25 of them and checked for updates just to make sure and it told me everything is up to date and working fine.

    sorry once again the language problem. is event manager the one who tells me if i need updates in the windows settings or is that another thing.

    And no, No new admin user. I set this Computer up once and didn't try to tweak too much. anything i did was just windows settings, optimitation like the one @notrace mentioned. and by the way yes, this was exactly one of the guides i followed, but thank you :)
    I have no Idea how to do so. would this just be like setting up a new user on the computer?

    And yes, you're absolutely right. The SSDs even took more than half the money the whole system costed. Let me give you a little Detail on that, so you can understand what i was thinking.

    I wanted to store all my libraries which are really a lot exclusively on SSD since i thought if I now invest all that into the best components, i would not even find myself running into exact these problems. I already admitted, maybe i was too optimistic on that, but i thought performancewise i could have no better option and as I need so much space, i wanted to make sure to keep me enough possibilities to expand my memory anytime i need it. Thats why i went for the biggest m.2 - 2 tb and the big 4 tb ssds - because now i have 10tb ssd space and still can expand.. i have another m.2 slot and i could still buy another if i need to. The last thing i wanted to do is recognize i need more space but don't have a sata port anymore for that and having to sell my 1 tb drives in order to get bigger ones.
    That's why i thought it would be the best way to ensure a top performance. and i really feel the difference. i've never had a ssd before. This really feels like 10x faster.
    And yea after all the research i did, i found that if you can afford it, the best thing to do is put the OS on the most efficient drive which for now is an m.2 as of what i know, having my daws, kontakt and all the applications i need to run smooth also on this fastest and most efficient drive and as Kontakt load parts of it into memory (ram) and streams the other part via DFD, i thought the best thing to do is storing this also on an ssd because it can stream data 10x faster, so i thought this would be the thing to do to get rid of any glitches soundwise, cause i often had the problem that even when i bounced to .wav or .mp3, it wasn't rendered correctly, missing sounds and glitching out...

    And yes i have asio4all too, as well as the fl studio asio driver... have to do a little testing again but i think this didn't give me any performance boost, if not the opposite and i also took some time to research and back then i read that the best thing to do is always go with the original interface drivers. only if your developer didnt provide any, go for asio4all. and thats what i did but yea maybe another false statement.

    i dont know about vmware but i will google for it. i dont know if i understood that right, but this is something i can create images of windows with, that i can then start for testing purposes, running them without installing, registering nor else, just like you would in a virtual machine?

    i never heard about a ramdrive before this thread but this seems to be another good point. i will need to google some on that and then i think this is another thing i'm gonna try. i wasn't aware of this.

    By the way, if everything else fails, I would still consider a clean os install because the update yesterday already seemed to have messed a few licenses up, which was my biggest fear, so i will have to look into that anyways. But still, if i can achieve it without all this, this would be great.
    I'm just saying this, because if I would be ending up doing so, i still would not be sure what to do... go for win 7, win 10 ltsb, win 7 lite? official? will win 7 be obsolete a year later, forcing me to end up going back to win 10...

    But yea that's just if everything else fails

    OK, that's what i meant by "maybe i was too optimistic". I thought this would be possible with those components. I thought I would increase the DFD performance drastically by storing it all on ssd only and have a good enough build to do so. I didn't want to take him as a reference since he's on mac and also on different daws, but i thought when daniel james can produce with such heavy amounts of big libraries, then anyone should be able to do so IF he has a suitable system. I have vienna ensemble but never used it. wanted to install, didn't have the elicenser and was like ok i don't need it anyways. I have my old pc for internet, downloading and testing purposes, running win 7 and being a mess. this thing is loud as fuck, you can barely hear anything when making music... all the reasons that made me think this time i'm building a good machine to avoid all this.
    So would this still be a plus? and don't i have to use some kind of wifi connection again, to set this thing up?
    Well again, maybe i was too optimistic on that and have to reconsider my thoughts but what about the people in here stating to use more than 100 tracks without a hiccup? also loaded with heavy amounts of kontakt libraries and midi data or are they talking about a Project where you mix waves files?
    I'm sorry, again, i thought i would have a good basic knowledge of Computer things but this thread prove me wrong.

    this might be offtopic , but it would be interesting if you get the same dropouts under macOS on the same Hardware. That way you could narrow down if it is a hardware or Windows issue.

    If Intel Graphics's not showing in Show hidden Devices it is not installed, you then have to install this:

    Then do go to hidden in device manager and right click on Intel Graphics and do what I explained to get the latest drivers. Nice to have a working Internal Graphic if your AMD card fail. Also nice to have a working Internal Graphic if you wanna test your system on Internal Graphics by disabling the AMD graphic card and connect your monitor to the Internal port. External Graphic cards is known for creating latency issues, even though AMD has a better reputation than Nvidia. I have no problem with Nvidia though

    Great that you updated the bios, did you try out your system before you did the tweaks? The reason I ask is that maybe those issues does not happen after the updates so you can have bios in default. But no big issue since it's easy to go back to default I guess. The reason I want you to try without any tweaks is because tweaks often are not the optimal settings for your system, but sometimes tweaks are necessary. And if the system behave bad on default since you know the tweaks it's easy to correct it.

    To check if your cpu is overclocked just look in the task manager. Mine should say 4.00 GHz but since its lighty overclocked it says 4.29 GHz. Like I said overclocking is very easy in ASUS, go into advanced settings in bios, then E2 Tuning Wizard. You just click one button and answer a couple of question (do a light overclocking first and if your system is stable try to increase) and boom ASUS does a nice stable overclocking for you. Then post a screenshot of task manager and see how much more than 3,70 GHz on your CPU. Your CPU is made for overclocking by the way, that is what the 8700K stands for. Not overclocking it means that you could have just bought a 8700 CPU which is "much" cheaper.

    The exact same hardware would probably work bad on a Mac, since Mac is very sensible to "incorrect" hardware. But it would be interesting to test a good working Hackintosh on a Window system to compare latency and stuff like that. The best way to do that is to build a Hackintosh first not the other way around

    If I had all all the plugins for mac, that i need and have for win, i would have considered that too, even though you see me struggling with this as a lifelong win user, believe me, you dont wanna see me working on a mac.
    Last time i had to deal with a mac, i had a girl showing me where i have to look into, because i couldn't figure it out.
    So I don't really know if that would be a good idea even though i've wanted to try a macintosh for years but before this i had an amd... But now that came to my mind. If i ever end up having to clean install OS, i will get back at you all and ask for help to build a dual boot with macintosh and win, if that's possible and a good idea.

    Since i did the updates and the tweaks, i left it now as it is to wait for your answer to make sure to not mess it up. sorry for leaving it all up to you.
    In the meantime I tried playing with the same project i used as reference before and played back while running latencymon.
    To be honest, though latencymon gives me better results now, and it might be because i now turned the turbo mode in bios off, but
    this project is in my opinion a small to medium size arrangement. 30 seconds, no automation so far, 4 instances of kontakt but 3 of them empty. 5 cinebrass patches, 1 amadeus patch, 1 action strikes patch, so i didn't even do the perc, 1 metropolis ark patch, a spitfire woodwind patch and a vocalise patch, all purged. Flute patch even playing only one fluttertongue note once in those 30 seconds.
    before all the tweaks, when latencymon reported about bad performance, while playing back, i hit at one point 100% on the kontakt cpu meter for like half a second.
    now after the updates and tweaks and latencymon saying my system is suitable, the same project playing back hits the 100% like 4-5 times in those30 seconds. fl shows cpu usage of about 29- 45% with that project, hitting the red like 1 time while playing back this. No FX except for 1 instance of valhalla and Fabfilter pro l2. And that's what i mean. that's the beginning of a project, i wouldnt call it big and if i'm already on like 50%, how am i supposed to complete this.
    I also played with the Asio drivers and buffers playing back, noticing no big differences except for of course buffer tweaks... the lower the buffer, the higher the cpu usage. we're still talking about playing back with 512 and 1024 smp buffer. if i decrease buffer, cpu of course hits higher.
    I noticed Fl Asio gives me the option to switch to 2048 with maybe a slightly better cpu performance but i think not soundwise.
    By the way this only goes for asio drivers. I tried the Focusrite Primary Sound device driver as well as the Primary Sound device just for checking, and no matter what i do to the buffer, they are unusable. CPU doesn't make that much of a different in monitoring but soundwise, its a single crackling and glitching... just to add this

    Hope this info is of any value.

    I would now go on with setting bios settings to default and doing the same with latencymon and before that looking into that driver thing you said if you don't tell me otherwise.

    @ThugLife Im sorry for not getting back to you yesterday but I had a hectic day. Please post each page from your latest LM test. With the current system you have you don't need to go up to 2048. One thing about FL. If that is the DAW that you would be using you need to optimize it. https://www.image-line.com/support/flstudio_online_manual/html/app_opt.htm. Also, of all the ASIO drivers the Magix Low Latency will give you the lowest latency. Send me those LM results. I am looking at the files you sent me.

    I edit my post how to overclock your CPU very easy. Read that. I think it's interesting to help by the way :like:
    So go back to default settings in bios, overclock and then test system. If you have the same issues do the tweaks again but keep the overclocking.
