About to start building my new desk and looking for some inspiration. My main thing at the moment is trying to find a cheap desk top (I will be refinishing in all likelihood so don't want expensive one).

Currently considering everything from the cheapest Ikea kitchen worktops to B&Q (UK Home Depot equivalent) plain interior doors....

Give me some inspiration people!

years ago there were some old Ikea huge things/desks with a right wing perfect for placing keyboards or making it a kind of second workplace, they weren't much height adjustable though and weighted a ton, nowadays they are smaller and motorised, still good but I prefer the older ones.

the only one thing I would like now is a keyboard that slides out from under the desk, that would make it all perfect

Would using MDF or particle board to make rack units for the legs of a desk be ok? Should I brace each unit (i.e. each leg) with pine or similar? I will also have a keyboard shelf in the middle as well a steel bar bracing the entire back of the desk.

Only asking as I reclaimed a ton of 1.6-2cm thick MDF/particle board panels from Ikea. Not sure if it's standard, but mine have a cage in the car park where they dump all timber panels and free for anyone to take. I got most panels and doors from one of their wardrobes so hope to hack that to build two rack units essentially for the legs of the desk.

Yeah, my favourite at the moment is probably the Ekbacken kitchen worktop in Ikea. Only £40 for 1.86m length and 63cm depth with a 2.8cm thickness. It's solid wood too (that's been laminated), so will be stable and I can screw the other bits onto (unlike hollow doors or their Linmonn desktop filled with corrugated cardboard). It's not too heavy either.

    Cheers. Deffo getting ideas!

I'm kinda planning to have 2 19" racks as the legs, pullout keyboard shelf, desk top 4U racks under each monitor speaker and dual 24" monitors in the middle.

I am also hoping to put together a faux leather and foam edging for an arm rest, but wouldn't know where to start finding the right foam or faux leather as fabrics aren't my thighs at all!

rent a proper circular saw with table or sliding latte (how their called again) and watch 2 youtube vids and build youre own and custom...its not that difficult...especialy when making proper plan..EDIT Dont need proper plan just so that you come clear
means go into ikea and copy the measurement

maybe you just need to spent a 100-200 round bout....depends on wood plates and if you use sliders and so on

    I use this:

    IKEA desk

But it is prolly quite small for a major studio. Or even a small studio! Perfect for just keyboard / laptop / monitor / random cool stuff ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have now bought all the supplies I need. I went for this for a desk top. £25 kitchen worktop so solid and not the hollowed out desk tops Ikea sell like the Linmonn: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products...ssories/lillträsk-worktop-white-art-50242723/

I can definitely recommend this top at nearly 2m long, 63cm wide and nearly 3cm thick, it's deffo decent. Comes with a 25 year guarantee too if anything happens like it sags or warps over time.

All in all i havent spent much and now I just need to lay out all the plans and start building it!

    Cost so far:

    £25 - Desk top
Free - reclaimed timber from Ikea given away
£3 - pack of 250 various sized screws
£5 - reduced floating shelf so I could get the hardware from it
£5 - random hardware like corner braces and squaring off blocks etc
£1 - reduced memory foam bathroom mat

Will put it together over the next week or two and will share progress or once completed.

Here is the supplies pre starting:

Heh. I recog those ikea "locking" holes! Hope you have fun, it's super enjoyable to DIY. (It does already look like an ikea project. =)
