with support for win 7 ending next year it might be time to upgrade to win 10, i was on 7 and loved it, for me the best os since xp, i decided to jump in and upgraded from 7 to 10 on my old pc to see how it runs with all soft and drivers , worked gr8, so i built a new custom pc and installed win 10 which you can still get for free using the 7 key, for me win 10 is just the bomb everything works faster, some soft dont work which it did on 7, but im talking about 2 plugins, of course if you dont go online with your win 7 pc it wont matter about no updates after next year and win 7 will still run fine, most new hardware only work with win 10, up to you what you want from a os as everyone has their own opinions on this subject, try it and you can always go back to 7 within 4 weeks, or make a system image for 7, then you have a backup if you do not like 10, after updating you have to leave it alone for a day or so to find and update to the latest drivers, then win 10 is good to go,i had no driver issues at all, and if the spying feature of win 10 bother you then you can dl spybot beacon or dont spy to disable it all, good luck with your decision.

As you know I have to read all comments at AZ. And I can tell for sure that win 10 users are having much more problems than Win 7 ones.

Windows 7 all the way, then Fedora, then ReactOS.
There are so many hidden "but"s in Win10, that for a very casual user it might seem to be a good OS, but be damned if you want to install your own non-signed driver. Even Win7 is making a fuzz about it, but Win10 takes it to the next level.
Also no classic theme. @SineWave and @tzzsmk are much better than me in writing long comments about it that goes into every little detail.
    TLS has viable workarounds.

W10´s new protection system is so fucked up, that updating it even their own software´s has stopped working due to illegal activity. There should be mode for people, who really know what they do and don´t need such protection scheme. I watch porn, download, stream and what not, but no viruses. Common sense is better than any virus protection or condom

Even though W10 is much snappier and optimized than 7, the administration/accounts/permission thing in W10 is a nightmare, I rather loose couple of CPU cycle and latest AVX support, but at least it starts every day without updaze(worst case bootloop), internet is ok and software works, just like every other day and "default settings" stays

If you want to work with music without having to troubleshoot your OS every now and then, and keep the PC offline, there's no reason to go W10 route. It really brings nothing to the table for us, just trouble and worse performance than previous MS OSes. XP is still performance king when it comes to music and plugins, believe it or not. But 7 is not much worse than XP, especially when you cut out the MS bloat, which is not so easy to do in W10.

If you occasionally work with music and use it for Internet most of the time, I'd actually think about using W10 in your place. It surely is more safe for Internet browsing, although as @Legotron and @wasgedn so perfectly said - "Common sense is better than any virus protection or condom" and "av is a virus too...", and W10 does have more problems, and it's harder to set up and maintain. You should know what's best for you, and you should go with what works best for your situation.

However, I will keep telling this story about W10 that astounded me. It happened to one of [now] my clients. She is a pro arranger and songmaker. She got this new laptop with w10 from the store, and after a while her mouse stopped working! No matter what I did, it just wouldn't work. So I said to her that I can install and setup W7 for her, and she agreed. I've done it and it's been more than a year since then... she's a happy camper.

    Cheers!

Win 7 for now. Untill software developers stop supporting Win 7 there's no need to upgrade to Win10 or whatever number they come up with...

If you want a really safe computer, use VirtualBox with Linux or another W7 for browsing. Or setup a dual-boot W7-W7, or W7-Linux. Linux is usually pretty straightforward to install, believe it or not. I can set it up in about 20 minutes, depending on your PC. There's almost nothing to do when you install it, just install a couple of programs with the package manager and that's it. Smoooth.

And you get to laugh at all the Windows users using Windows for browsing, getting all kinds of troubles, installing different AVs, infected with all kinds of malware and viruses... :rofl:Man, I've never made a better decision than to install Linux for browsing and daily activities. It just works better and easier to maintain. Debian 9 here, with MATE desktop.

For me it's Windows 10 LTSB, with updates turned off, various background services disabled/deleted and all outgoing connections to MS blocked.

Hi @Slaking_97, you're quite right, of course, it is pretty clunky... and with all that metro nonsense, but i'm pretty lazy and more interested in getting on with my audio work than fiddling about updating OSs.
when I installed that particular pc, I had only a legit win8 license handy (legit was necessary here).
That machine was only connected to the internet for the microsoft activation and never since.
I then got on with installing the needed software for audio production, connected it up to the studio and started audio work, which is what i do.
I keep telling meself that I'll get round to updating to 8.1, but it aint happened yet and probably never will.
The laptop I'm typing on now has win7, there's one downstairs with winXP (yes, even still in 2019) and there's another laptop in a baggie for out and about with win10LTSB installed and a usb stick linux distro for good measure.
Like i said, horses for courses.:dunno:
btw, I'm in the middle of having to leave and move house, so if anybody knows a nicer place to live than the UK at the moment, I'd be really grateful.
    :chilling:.

No reason not to switch to Windows 10 (latest update), except the hassle with changing the OS. To me it seems like many Windows 7 enthusiasts like to shoot down Windows 10 just because of.. the hassle to change. Okay stay on Windows 7 but no need to come with false claims against Windows 10. Stop with the Windows 7 snobbery, don't behave like fucking Linux fanboys

I feel you man, having to change is always scary, if something doesn't work as expected etc... i myself didn't want to change immediately after Win 10 came out for the same reason.
What I meant before was that you surely had rough times making Win 8 working well and also making the habit of its clunky UI. I still remember those goddamn tiles in the "start menu", grrrr
