It does not use 8 bit values, but it is an 8 bit language, as the first bit says what type of message is being sent. So it is 7 bit.
Several MIDI messages can use two bytes for data representation (MSB and LSB), and then offers a resolution of 2^14 = 16,384

Seems like the new spec is only available to their members, but making me curious:
Afaik MIDI is an one-directional protocol atm. Does anyone here have an idea how the MIDI source will know if its target will support MIDI 2.0? Will it send standard MIDI@31baud (or so) with additional info modulated on top of it? Or will it need some kind of handshaking via a bidirectional connection?
And will it still rely on the 5pole DIN cables? Or will 2.0 rather be a kind of "MIDI via USB" protocol or a "DAW-to-plugin" standard?
Any experts here to share their knowledge?

MIDI 2.0??? No way!!! We just had only 36 years time to get used to MIDI 1.0 and now, all of a sudden, MIDI 2.0? No need to rush things, take a deep breath and relax.

7 Bit that is. We don't happen to have 256 Values, it's 128.
I don't get why it takes 40 years to come up with something better than 7bit and 31250 baud.

:dont:I rarely use MIDI, except for connecting synths or controllers. I just posted it here because others might find it interesting. Why so negative about information?

i remember conversations in the 90's about how V1 was outdated and how it was going to be updated very soon. i do not want to sound negative but i am not holding my breath.

one thing that would be interesting would be a more flexible, expanded control mapping protocol, even though it all works reasonably well as is.

Totally agree. Remember that MIDI is a really open standard and it involves software and hardware. It's very hard to make a major new version.
The productivity of our MIDI workflow will speed up which is a lot. Not just the bit-depth of the values.
Of course isn't gonna make us better musicians.

Thanks a lot for the endorsement.:bleh::bow::mates:

Musicianship and making better music do not relate much to the technology. In most cases, technology and technological views have negative impacts upon the musicianship because it makes people more busy with itself and also aids them in making trashy stuff. Without technology we had a better music world (you can look at the past) because it was in the capable hands of real musicians not technicians.

    quit your childish generalisations.

you make trashy stuff, so you mean its "because of midi", or do you have another excuse?

That's not what I meant. For equal talent in music better MIDI productivity tools allows to make better music. If you use them, that is.

IMHO that's wrong on so many levels... technicians develop MIDI (and other music) tools, real musicians use them.

I mean, your comments are all based on generalisations, loose statements but foremost judgmental claims on all sorts of stupid things
and now you make yet another silly claim of midi being the reason for "crappy music"
so the natural and justified question becomes

why do think you make the certified crappy "music" you make? (and I dont mean the many times when you been caught uploading other peoples stuff and passing it as yours btw..)

your own plinking, it sucks, is it because of technology? is it midis fault?

nobody is going to "fine" you foster
on the contrary I think most would be pretty intrigued and would appreciate a simple honest answer
