Good news, the current standard is pretty outdated.

It will not have even an slight effect on the musicality of music. Just for solving some possible interconnectivity and management issues in tools and DAWs.

Could someone please explain how the new standard can help him to make better music?

The rumour is MIDI 2.0 has that analog warmth we've been missing. Also, it brings out the lows and punches through "the mix".

"During the prototyping phase, the proposed MIDI 2.0 specification is available only to MMA and AMEI members"

Say What! ...Black Op Electronic Oscillation ...Muted!

*Finds the secret server documents* Oh so now I can Interface with a Banana!

All joking aside:"The MIDI 2.0 initiative updates MIDI with auto-configuration, new DAW/web integrations, extended resolution, increased expressiveness, and tighter timing -- all while maintaining a high priority on backward compatibility."

Of course backward compatibility, or that would be insane! Looking forward to increased expressiveness...This is actually exciting news.

If the resolution they named means that we will have more than 0-127, so yes, musicality will be affected in my opinion

It doesn't mean that we can't be musically accepted with MIDI now, but it will surely be better

It has been 10 years every NAMM they came out with the same news. Nothing will happen, as always.

For a standard that old the current version works quite well.:)

Even if they standardize it next week it will take years or decades to implement it on new hardware (Remeber IPv4 to IPv6 transformation? And this was really necessary and urgent!).
And I would suspect more (compatibility) problems than in the past.

Hence I won't expect much impact on our daily life in the next 10 years from now.

I would say these guys actually do a good job. MPE is one of the more recent extensions that some might easily ignore but others love it.

It's not rocket science but the hard work - making the spec water-proof in many scenarios and getting all participants to agree to a certain standard - is something remarkable.

I like the new idea of "pre-set" hardware profiles even compatible with old hardware. Kind of like plug and play with all parameters for your midi synth, "IF manufacturers and patent owners"(or even some nice hack/DIY girls and guys) have time or decide to update/upgrade their so called profiles/drivers, we´ll see

    About time.

Better timing. Better resolution. Very much needed features IMO. Magnifico! :)

By expressing more precisely and like you said previously in one post out of normal scales, really microtonal. 3D expression, not like making MPE in more than just seaboard(think like a cube, where you´re movement expressing sound with precise of finger movement).
    Also look for MIDI-CI :mates:

@ICWC Don´t spoil every post by your opinion, use it wisely. Observe things, don´t bash here and there, when you need to.. sometimes kind of makes me worry about you..
edit: everyone is still my friend, there´s as many diffrent person as people in the world, peace

Word on the street is that it'll automatically sidechain everything.

I would say, less stepped midi for such sends from controllers, that is more continuous, smoother, accurate etc. More variants for velocity, so better for analog processing filters, LFOs, modulations, etc.
MIDI 2.0 is same, for example, as more bit depth for audio, more oversampling for less aliasing or for less nyquist area EQ problems or for true peak limiting, sample accurate automation.... Something like that in case of comparison..
But this should have been done in 2000s, now it would be cool to get MIDI 3.0 ) with something like 0-65535, not 0-127)
And lookahead note pressing, play before you press a key on midi keyboard, melody pre-writing by switching usb midi in head hahahahahahahahahahahahahah

If I'm not mistaken, we are still using the same MIDI version since the 80s which runs on 8 bit.
    It's about time to evolve.

Unfortunately you are 100% right: IPv6 has a very long way to go before it can be considered as mainstream. AFAIK nobody uses it except maybe in some labs or universities for research purpose.
Let's hope things will move faster with MIDI 2.0.

Gosh I just thought about one downside of it... with MIDI 2, if they use 14-bit resolution, sample bank makers will be able to make sounds with over 16.000 layers. Just imagine how big these sample banks will be. [I'm kinda half-serious :)]

I'm with you @mild pump milk, mate. They were talking about MIDI 2 even more than 10 years ago. Why it took them so long?! It should be even more advanced these days. But the thing is, I'd take anything. I'm even satisfied with normal MIDI in many cases, but CC resolution is really low, and timing can be so awful, especially over USB.
