Well, maybe not a common reason for choose one over another, but it's nice to have listed various reasons to use these different programs.
Only now I have a project I did not want of trying a bunch of different programs

Yes, but I am doing single archives and want to keep them as compact as possible. They will be backed up on another drive.
I am doing audio libraries, so they won't be split up or even touched very much.

It is the same thing in Linux/OSX/Windows/FreeBSD.
I can change the operational system, but keep the same file management.

I can say this, When I use winrar to extract certain rar files I get directory errors. Dir paths too long. I have to use 7zip to extract the files.
So I am siting here scratching my head where you are getting your information.

beacuse it works maybe and have always worked a.f.a.i.k.
I dont see any reason to use anything else for unrar or packing files.
And yes i have tried them all and some is still installed like 7zip (but thats for tasks winrar cant do which are very few)
I dont get those youngster that have to reinvent the wheel again and again.
I still use win commander best file manager in the world nothing beats that and it was released in 92 i believe.
But youngster use explorer and other crappy file manager that never ever gonna be as fast as win commander

Speaking of Compression Techniques, is anyone old enough to remember WaveZip? Back in the day "zipping" anything Wav file, would ruin the fidelity. So WaveZip was created. Now days you don't have to worry about fidelity loss through compression. Interesting times...

I found one fix for this ...Unrar into a main drive with only one directory. Example C:\AUDIO\"unrar here". The "too long" directory paths are usually encountered within a deeper structure. After which you can move about the un-archived content freely.

Thanks @KidPix I just added it to my Win 8 Registry. Hopefully it works cause I'm not installing Win 10 ...(To quasi-quote midi-man above), cause it works

Edit: not too far off topic, grab the “Take Ownership” reg hack while your at "howtogeek.com". It has saved my butt more than once: https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/win...ership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

Do you *really* need to switch operating systems all the time to do what you need?
Well, let's start with the fact most people use WinRAR without buying the license - both illegal and annoying. I see no reason to throw WinRAR on your PC when 7-Zip is small, easy to install, available instantly everywhere, without any legal issues and does the exact same job and then some more.
For starters, we're using 7-Zip only so we don't have to keep WinRAR and some other software as well - we have all in one and it's easier and simpler.
You meant Total Commander? May I suggest you take a look at XYplorer's features?
    • Regex and boolean logic in search, duplicate file finder, file contents search - including saving search templates
    • Multiple level undo between sessions (recover files you have accidentally renamed/moved yesterday)
    • 100% portable, including the ability to have your own double-click associations which are maintained across different computers
    • Queued file operations - when copying stuff to backup, things are moved one at a time so the speed doesn't drop and the disk isn't too stressed
    • Tags (just like in OSX) - you can tag some files from different folders or even drives, and then display all files that were tagged the same
    • Batch rename, plus for manual renaming pressing up/down saves the name and goes straight to renaming next file
    • Portable "New >" menu, you can add your own presets as well, for example New > Ableton Live Set would create a whole folder with all the required files and maybe some of your favorite samples, etc
    • File date shown in age (eg. 3 minutes ago) instead of full date and time, if you want
    • Folder sizes can be shown automatically without having to right click and wait for the system to process
    • Color filters, eg. files modified this week have their name in green, files not backed up are shown with a gray background, etc
    • Image preview popup when moving the mouse over a file

The thing is not if I change a lot of time or not, but
the comfort to use the same thing in different OS.
Even if it is just one time a day or even a week...
I want to use the same thing!

Yes today it is called Total Commander but it is used be called Win commander up until early 2000 i think.
It is basically a hot up version of the filemanager used in windows before win 95.
In mid/late 90,s Peter Norton (Norton AV crap inventor) made a very similar file manager he more or less ripped off Win Commander he called it Norton Commander
And i believe that made the end of Win Commander as it got out of bussiness or they sold to the company?
After some time a few year if think the software came back but they had change named to Total Commander.
Although the rename function in Total commander miss a few options its the only renaming function i know of that can rename multiple folders at the same time.
All other renamers i tried dont accept to rename folders only files.
Oh and i really cant do without two windows in the filemanager so much quicker than copy/cut paste from onelocation on the same three to another location.
Another thing i like about it you can move/copy unrar several folders files at the same time to different locations basically as much as the computer and harddrives can handle so of you have many kontakt libs that is compressed (you can of course tell win commander which rar or zipfile program you want to use for those tasks) just hit space (it will highlite the file/folder) then hit tab it changes to the other window and let you decide where you wanna extract or move/copy you file then wait a little while then click in the button "background" and continue with the next task.

According to Wikipedia, Norton Commander came out first and Win Commander years later.

I was wondering, how much space can you save compressing a NCW compressed Kontakt library using Rar or 7z? In my experience, keeping the libraries uncompressed is the better solution,

    A) it doesn't save significant space compressing the library
    B) the library is instantly accessible and doesn't need extraction
    C) in case of corruption/damage, some parts of the library remain available and it might even be functional.
