I never use any registry cleaner. When I uninstall a program, I delete what I need to delete from the registry manually. If I were to use a registry cleaner i would make sure that there is a backup of the registry done before that. The problem is that many times we become aware of registry problems after we have made other changes to the registry and subsequently the backup is worthless.

i use CCleaner too, and never got problems, but again, my OS is not connected to the internet, network disabled, no firewall, no updates, no antiviruses, all security disabled and uninstalled, just a few essential services... and I use only my daw and a few Adobe apps, so actually I have no idea if it tries to call home of f.up some other software

It worked like that for few years without any issues... after few Years, when the time is "just right", I reinstall the complete OS with new versions of plugs and daws. ...it usually takes me a week to tune it up, but luckily it is just once in a few years.

I guess everyone has it's own way to make that OS do what they need him to do :)

Hey guys. I just returned to win7 after a good 5 years of using windows 8.1 . I forgot how smooth it was. My machine is completely offline so i couldn't update it at all. What can i say? Freaking amazing experience, good old times. It was already a smooth sail on oldish hardware so it's even better on ssd. This is the real deal, my machine (i5,ssd,8ram) will stay like this forever. No homecalling, cortana, updates etc. Thanx miCrosoft!!

I never used any "cleaning" utility, still cannot see the advantage of such weird software.

    I'm using:
Regshot for capturing registry and file system changes by comparing before/after installation
I like this one best because it's fast and the "diff" files are very readable, including nice html output if you like

Sysinternals Autoruns for saving a clean state before installing software (it can compare startup item changes as well)

Sysinternals Sysmon for monitoring live file system activity, including filtering options

And, not the least, using the built-in Windows backup tools to create a full system image after fresh OS install and snapshots whenever I feel like doing one.

Using total commander as well, plus a number of great freely available plugins.
