Agreed, once I tried to change the attack samples or the waveforms of the sustain phases in the D-50. Didn't work at all.
But I always kept off the SY-77, 1500 parameters per sound were a tiny bit too much for my taste (and time).

Interesting stuff, sounds like a pain in the ass. I have no intention of making a Trumpet patch. I'd of course reach for a Trumpet library for that. I'm hoping to understand how this stuff works so I can create something that has that old Yamaha digital sound, somewhere between a SY-22 and a SY-77, without using either. I actually came close to buying one. The auction ended with the other person beating me by seconds, same bid, apparently that's how it works. I was sort of revealed honestly. The thing is, these machines are old and by all accounts a pain in the ass to program. The thinking was that with the thousands of presets around web I could mix and match them to make something new, if that's even possible. I wouldn't know, never used one, never seen anyone else properly use one.

Speaking of old sounds, you guys wouldn't know anything about getting a 12 or 13bit sound ITB would you? I mean besides buying premade 12 or 13bit samples, or buying an old Ensoniq EPS or something similar.

A good way to start could be TAL-Sampler for the pcm waveforms of your choice (can be cut from the SY77 dump but anything else) and the synth of your choice. Just mix and EQ both to taste and use s/th like TAL-Dac to post-process.
Play around with different samples and presets, you'll be surprised how much gold there is yet to be discovered!

FM synthesis can make tons of different timbres and beautifull/unique sounds but it's very difficult.Like you said the most difficult part is to build a sound that matches the one you want/have in your head.
I 'm rarely satisfied with the sounds I make with FM8,they never sound musical. And I'm not a newbie.
With the last Waves that I took a quick look at,it's possible to get musical sounds easily compared to FM8.

Wasn't the SY77 doing sort of what the D-50 did earlier, meaning: combine (tiny) samples with synthesis (in Yamaha's case, FM synthesis)?

In a way, Yamaha's Montage is sort of the next step. I have one and it's one of the best synthesizers I've ever owned. Can do what the SY77 did and much much more.

Regarding the pure SY77 sound(s), there are a few sample-based options:

I found that the best way dealing with FM is taking an hour every week to browse through the many, many DX7 patches publicly available.
I first eliminated the duplicates using a file duplicate finder (by content) and then picked out the ones that I found useful or at least interesting.
I wish somebody took the time to write software that can analyse a wave file and approximate the FM parameters to find a best fit (one could use something like the "rainbow tables" but for FM OP parameters and then just search for the appropriate spectrum), but honestly, Wavetable Synthesis does this even better, easier and by smoothly interpolating between wave cycles, any FM evolving over time can be done using WT synthesis, so it's probably not worth the effort.

Right, thanks. I totally forgot about TAL. I'll give it a shot.

Hello. Studying this rom I have discovered that this engine generate the PWM sounds by varying the sample rate of the reading of samples.

There is no sampler currently on the market capable of reproducing that engine. I would like to try making one VST to reproduce my old SY55 which is a SY77 without FM. The engine needs to have a sample rate table to generate the notes, then, it's just a substrative, and some efects. On sy77, some part of the sampler is modulated by the FM module.
