A quick look at my setup. It is not what it was about 20years ago. Early '90 I got a really big studio. But now I only do remixes from time to time.
Anyways, here it is whats left of it.

Access Virus TI (I only uses this lately for master keyboard - as a VA synth is just sounds too cold for my tastes - actually it sucks :)
Roland V-Synth XT (which I use the most for messing with rhythms - still one of the best VA synths imo)
Moog Voyager (for bass only, sucks for leads)
Moog Slim Phatty (also for bass. Especially the filter overload feature is great for deep throbbing bass sounds - shame the Voyager doesn't have this)
Nord Rack 2 (great for pad sounds)
Oberheim OB-Mx 12 voices (a really great analog synth which has a unique warm sound to it)
    Korg Wavestation AD
    Yamaha DX7II
    Korg Poly800
Waldorf Blofeld keys (versatile VA synth - great value for money. If you just want to own one hardware synth ... go for this !)
    Yamaha NS10
    Yamaha HS80M
    Akai APC40
    Akai MPD32
    M-audio Profire 2626
Ableton Live 8 (still the best DAW for getting ideas on the board)
Logic Studio 9 (for mastering only)

Here is photo of most things now setup.

Edit: I do not use software plugins that much; Only for mastering I use some. No Vsti for me though.

    Hi,

nice working place, but you don't record any audio signals?
Also the placement of the monitors doesn't seem to be very good, so close to the wall.

Audio signals are feed thru a rack mixer before going to the Profire. I record every channel separately before mastering.
I also have a M-Audio ProjectMix but never use it anymore. Its boxed and ready for sale.

    About monitors:
Works fine for me. Using monitors are all about learning to get used to them. No matter how they are placed. If you know how it should sound correct (by listening many cd on it) it is ok.
Though I do not use them lately. Because my two kids are sleeping when I am working on tracks I cannot use monitors.
I use Focusrite VRM Box and a KRK 8300 headphone for mastering. I can highly recommend this little hardware thing. It is a truly amazing product for doing this.
First a bit skeptical but it can do wonders to your mix! Trust me. My mixes are never so clear and balanced as before. No fatigue to the ears too. I can mix for several hours without having a lazy ear.
With monitors I have to take a break to get my ears to ease before commencing again.

Hint for everyone: BUY A Focusrite VRM Box. :)

even though you have almost the same mistakes as John C, for some reason i like it.
    it's very simple and comfy;
+ you have the heater near your feet, and that alone beats all other mistakes! :mates:

Would be nice to try it, indeed.
There is also an interface from Focusrite, which has this technology built in already (I guess it's the same).

Btw, there is also a Plug-In for this purpose, the 112dB Redline Monitor. Have to try it out.

amazing stuff, u went on a splurge right buying a virus ti and saying it sucks means u don't know what u r doing right. at least u could produce a very synthetic track. and also u should learn to use vsti about 80% of the synths u have u can get a vsti or samples to play in Kontakt sampler.
