I can understand using sampled synths in a sampler like Kontakt to get the original sound, and for the analog circuit coloring, but other than that, is there any reason to load up many Gigs worth of samples for synth instruments?
What got me wondering so much was the many Kontakt sampled synths i see that are not exactly considered desirable ... and bent-circuit and "broken" toy piano, toy casio and such.
It seems some are in a race to produce the highest quality sample libraries of the worst-sounding things possible..

I think these are two distinct topics:
    1) legitimate reasons for analog stuff
    2) marketing crap to sell anything a fool will buy.

I'd like to hear some discussion of both.

It's more about colors, timbres, pastische, feelings associated with perticular sounds, etc. We use sounds in music as artists use different colors, brushes, materials and canvases.

I sample VST synths to save CPU :) It's like freezing but being able to 'play' the frozen track.
Besides that I don't like Samples 3rd party Patches.

theres no way that our soundcards ever will sound like an (old) analog synth - i will never use vsti as a synth

True, any sound can be used, and the brushes are like the instruments, and the interface can make a huge difference.

When i said "undesireable" ... well, that is a big generalization, and you make me think that, for those who do want those sounds...they are not likely going to find a VSTi reproduction, and it may be that the mechanics of the synth made it "undesirable" anyway, so samples may be the way to go. :)

I had not thought about saving CPU - another valid point.

Yeah, well that is an aspect I considered "valid" and what many sampled synths claim. Although if it is a digital synth there are fewer components, their analog audio outputs are not digital.

Ok , I am glad to have feedback about valid reasons!
Now I want to hear some sample pack BASHING !! :trashing:

Reason to use synth samples? To get signature sound of the certain synth of course. Back then when we didn't have luxury of quality VST instruments it was common to borrow a expensive synth and sample it inside out. Or even buy a synth just for sampling it. Someone who has not living thru that era just may not understand how much that procedure actually is affecting the output, when you build your banks yourself they tend to to be much more interesting. I believe most of the "broken sound" libraries you see nowadays are exactly that, producers just didn't share them before. For me it's ok to ask money for it. Just do yourself a favor and instead of (every time) download ready bank try to create something from the start by yourself, no matter what is the source broken analog synth or VST plugin.

I dunno -- I've been scouring the Web for .sf2 libraries for some of my old analog synths, like the Kawaii K4 (they have EpiK4 for Kontakt, but it's new instruments based on K4 sounds, not the actual factory presets), or the PROteus/2 and MPS+. I know those libraries are around, but they're not around, if you catch my drift. (and if anyone has any leads ...) I have about a jillion sounds in VIs and samples, but I started out with just those hardware synths and it'd be nice to have them -- maybe for nostalgia's sake or maybe because I'd used them for so long as composition tools that my brain is wired to work with those sounds, I don't know. One of the main reasons I got into VIs was because my hardware broke down and I figured it was time to enter the 21st century. Still miss 'em, though.
