Hi , I'm looking for synth presets that sound like a takbox. Here are some examples of ones I like.
talkbox at 2.05 This guy gives away the free flp giving you the setting.

audentity future nu disco talkbox at 1.32, this construction kit doesn't include a preset for this talkbox setting, it just gives you a sample of whats recorded, which was frustrating because its the best sound in the entire video.

Can anyone reccommend more settings like this. I really love that funky synth talkbox sound.

the real good one: buy a talkbox, I use banshee 2 from rocktron, until now the softwares cant reach the real thing (thats why the samples)
But you can also start learning about the differences between talkbox, vocoder and harmonizing on the same channel from your video.
Vocalsynth 2 is a good way to start:like:

All you need is a synth with a good vowel filter (I prefer SugarBytes Unique but there are many others) and feed the filter with aggressive sounds with many overtones like Saw wave or pulse wave with low pulse width. You then modulate the vowel filter in order to make it "talk" the vowels you want.

  6. It is easy to get exact, but the workflow killer is that it not a real-time thing. That's why people keep trying to nail it with lots of VST vocal formant effects. But many of them don't really IMO sound like talkboxes, and even one with great throat modelling is not going to sound like YOU using a talkbox.

Record your vocals dry. De-convolve them into separate impulse and resonance files. Then you resynthesize it by using a compressed recording of your audio input - the material that would be playing through the talkbox speaker into your mouth - as the new "impulse", convolved with the resonance file you extracted from your own voice. There is no "synth", the filter is you, your mouth - that's why it sounds that way.

My guess is that since computers are so fast now, most people don't have a suite of good non-real-time spectrum analysis and editing tools around, or ever even think about them. So if it can't be done in a plugin... it can't be done. But it's better than throwing cash and/or time at trendy vocal tools just to sound like Delay Lama.

So how do you "de-convolve" the vocals exactly?

Thanks for the responses, I actually own the rocktron banshee, I just like the artificial talkbox sounds as well, its easy to record a complicated solo with a vst whereas using a real talkbox takes skill and practice. Both can sound great in my opinion. I looked up sugarbytes unique and it sounds amazing, very similar to daft punk. So thanks for that suggestion fiction.

  11. That depends upon which software you use. Back in the day, I used this thing called MarcoHack which made it really easy. But you could still do it with CSound, SoundHack, and other tools. Hopefully there are newer softwares that do this also. SoundHack is still around, so IIRC with that you would run Hack>Spectral Analysis, and then Hack>Spectral Extractor to deconvolve.

I would be amazed if something in the iZotope suite can't do that, but I haven't used it. Voxengo have some dedicated deconvolution tool. Some convolution reverbs do this also.

    Zynaptiq Unveil maybe?
iZotope RX7 can somewhat separate transients from sustained tones AFAIR (a bit like Eventide Physion) but I doubt it has any deconvolution features...

Do you have any info about MarcoHack? Haven't found anything online.

  13. Separating transients from sustained tones IS deconvolution, at least one possible kind.

It was developed by Marco Pranger at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht in the 1990s. My age is showing! It runs on old "classic" Macs in OS 9, not generally useful to people who don't use really old Macs.

But my thinking was that since there were tools for doing this kind of thing 20 years ago, there are probably newer ones that are even more capable. Think about the actual technique, and then you can translate that to whatever the latest tools available are. I pretty much retired from music for 10+ years while raising my kid, but since they are away now I am just starting to get back into it. So I am still learning about what people use for various tasks.

    Thanks!
I guess that for sounds in which the transient is unrelated to the tonal components, you'll get at least interesting results ;)
My recommendation: The denoiser in Adobe Audition. I'm still using the old, faster version 1.5 for Windows XP under Win 7 (officially incompatible but works in compatibility mode) but later versions may use the same process.
It includes the typical manual noise profiler but also has a number of adjustable coefficients for the spectral filtering process which funnily often works better for tonal vs transient separation than specialized automatic tools.

Maybe the source code of Marco's software is still available?

The Electrospit is closer, but still lacks the high end “spit”. No way around it. You wanna authentic TB sound you gotta use a real TB. Not saying we won’t ever get 99.999% the way there w tech. Just not there yet... I’m actually about to start testing a MIDI controller harmonized w my real TB so I can do poly lines live. That’s my biggest complaint about using a real TB. You can harmonize w yourself. Hopefully this harmonizer idea will work.

I, just like Theodore, own talkboxes, vocoders and a home made one (EV driver and all) like Roger used on more bounce etc...And just like Theodore, I agree that the Electrospit is the future for me. I loved the sound. I could careless about high end "spit" and have no doubt that if I even wanted the Electrospit to give me that I could find a way to make me very happy. Why does everything have to be exactly like something else?

That thing sounded to me so incredible that now I must have one.

When I said spit. I should have said articulation. I think the Electrspit sounds good. But it doesn’t sound as articulate as a real TB. I’m interested in buying one too just to have another toy!!! Cheers

I hadn't heard of electro spit til this thread and I agree that it sounds incredible. It would get rid of the problem of some sounds being hard to pronouce with the talkbox, its hard to pronouce S, H, G, .

I got sugarbytes unique, thanks for that suggestion too. What is the preset on sugarbytes unique that you use to get the vocal talkbox type sound fiction ?
