I guess it was USB, but I'm not sure anymore. All I know it was prior to iPad compatibility.

Ok, buddy. You got me curious and checked around. The all-silver faceplate is the original FW model, right? The one I had is USB with Oled display, pre iPad.

yes my friend, the old one gave me problems & always had to do firmware updates, the new one(the one with ipad connectivity works fine here),also what mic cables do you use ?
I'm using Blue quad cables & a couple of mogami ones.

I wish I could find Mogami or equivalent in my hometown. Investing in a couple of meters for at least one cable would be good. I use Proel cables and plugs for all my cabling. I also have a very sturdy Planet Waves cable with foldable plug orientation.

  6. There are folks that will tell you that cables make little difference in the signal chain and that it is a waste of money spending your treasure on extravegance. I hear great differences in cables and have chosen to use Vovox in my studio. I have found them used for less than half their price new, buying one or two at a time and still needing one more for my monitors and then I'm complete for my small setup.

If you can solder you can save yourself a ton of money and make them yourself exellent cables using Neutrik XLR connectors and Mogami or Canare or similar HQ wire. If you have a studio with many in and outputs you could save yourself hundreds of dollars or more going the DIY route.

I've just learned that now there's a Mogami distributor in my city, Lima. A retailer is offering a 3m Mogami 2791 cable with Neutrik XLR connectors for a little less than $50 dollars. I'll commision two cables to run from my interface to my monitors with the Xmas bonus from work. Thank you guys for directing my attention to this.

  10. Hey, if they have the Mogami 2534 this might be a better fit because of the shielding of radio frequency and magnetic interference such as you might find lurking about your big magnet monitors. The 2791 is more of a heavy duty, broadcast and live venue cable which stands up well to abuse.

Samson at times comes up with some really interesting budget products, indeed. Although the quality of them is usually Behringerish or rather like Alesis. Their monitors, mixers, handy accessories and even some headphones aren't half bad in my experience, but you have to audition them first and not expect them to last as long as really quality stuff. Anyway, interesting that you mentioned their mic!

Regarding cables, I'm not that anal about them as they really don't make such a big difference, but I do use Klotz ones. Klotz is just more available everywhere here in EU and they make really high quality cables, too. I wouldn't mind Mogami cables, though! :) Purity of copper and shielding does make a bit of difference [in capacitance], yes, but only for the long runs. For up to 2m cables anything should do. I read a really good article about it 106 years ago somewhere...

I had a Samson CO1 which was actually pretty great until it got noisy. Emailed Samson support and they are "Out Of Stock" on the element which according to everything I've read ends up being the noise culprit. Never heard back from them.
Then I went looking to see if there were any DIY upgrades for it that would involve replacing the element. Couldn't really find anything though.
It has a blue light which will show you if you have phantom power or not. So it's primary use is sanity checking the phantom power before I hook up the ribbon mic.

I once owned a pair od Samson C02s. They retail for about $140 bucks. Those mics were lifeless, shrill, and brittle. I just traded them for something else. For around $160, you can buy a matchred pair of Rode M5. They are miles away in quality from each other, way over 20 bucks better. Sometimes I prefer them over Shure Sm81s for overheads. It's just my experience. If they work for someone else, fine. I don't go for Samsons anymore. There are better alternatives for about the same money.

Agreed! My inexpensive mic locker is pretty much as complete as I want it right now. My drummer has a set of Audix or Nady condensers (can't remember which) for overheads which worked pretty well. I've got an MXL 990, an MXL Ribbon for studio work, SM57's (2), some Sennheiser E880, etc.
For my next mic purchase, I'm looking real hard at the Slate Virtual Mic System. But I may just decide to go the WA/Stam route and get one of the 47 or 67 clones. I'll be looking in the $1K range for that one. But first, PC upgrade to contend with/pay for.

I'd possibly give my left ball for an Audio-Technica 4047SV.

There was one for $200 on e-bay but I didn't have enough money at the time to buy it!

The AT4040 - is a condenser microphone, has a large aperture for obtaining smooth and natural sound characteristics. It can be employed in a diversity of situations: in the studio and live format, as well as for highly demanding digital recording systems.

or Microphone Rode NT1-A - is a low-noise, studio, condenser, professional microphone, which has only 4dB of its own noise.

It really does give a fullness with all frequencies present for vocals (+EQ of course). I might go one step further with an SM7b for the studio style vocal personally. Absolute favorite because I can use it pretty much anywhere as opposed to a condenser and gives awesome warm vocal tonality.
