For me, i have the klanghelm, nice tool you can do all what you want, in term of compression, i have tested the 160a, for me it's very specific, so one better than other no, just two different tools, but i think you can approch, the 160a sound with fine tuning with the dc8c, i like both =)

Just for the books, it should be 'Klanghelm DC8C vs 2 DBX 160A' because the latter is mono. So it's 23€ vs 1000€, let me think...

My hardware 160A sounds syrupy and bouncy, and once in a blue moon i'll still print some tracks with it in the mix process. Better than the vst for a few obvious reasons, but the vst is close and much more convenient. Only tried DC8C a few time, so no comment here.

I didn't even try the Klanghelm, and I only used emulations of the DBX, but I'm gonna say Klanghelm anyway, because it's much more versatile. From my experience with emulations of the DBX, and the way engineers talk about it, it's a one trick pony.

maybe bad compare bad choice...but i got to say the dbx160a is pretty allround compressor too , which does his thing good to real good from what i had read...but its all relative...as citric says for him it was very specific comp...
edit ok real bad compare a mono compressor with stereo compressor but anyway...lol
    --------------------
no no...dbx 160a mono comp you can get for 500 bucks from revive on ebay...thats modded hot shit....i saw one unmodded go for 160 euro on ebay...new from dbx bout 500...still heavy difference to 23..yep you right...
all say its good for drums even it has no attack and release knobs...this super easy circuit from dbx must be good...
i will get one next year...comp i will buy next is alesis3660 best for under 100...
thats something im curoius bout comparing vst's with this 2 hardware compressors..ebay adtext say gerne : plugins kommen da halt doch nich ran ...he he...

Indeed, DBX 160A has a very recognisable sound, so for tracking different sources one should use different compressors, or something that sounds a bit more neutral, like my Drawmer DL241, Urei 1176, or Focusrite Red. It does sound really good on drums, especially if you compress them separately. I like how Alesis 3630 sounds on drums... yeah, a cheapo one, I know.

Klanghelm DC8C is one of the best ITB compressors, IMHO, yes. I think comparing VST compressors with hardware ones is a bit odd. Different stuff for different purposes/sound.

  16. If I had a DBX 160a I would use it. I do have as well as use the Warm WA76 every chance I can because to me it beats all the plugins that I have used in dialing in a sound quickly (still haven't jumped on the Acoustica bandwagon, but every person here that uses their stuff raves...I do have some if their freebies that I use on mixdown), easily and with nice knobs to twiddle about. I want to get another as well as an opto LA2A type pair for my input chains. I have auditioned the DC8C as well as the MJUC but use the free, less tweakable Klanghelm comps which are freakin' great bits of soft. For $23/24 I should pop for their bigger, bader siblings. They are at the top of the price/quality index and are a steal at those prices.

dbx160a is def in range of coverage from budget.....with luck you can get even a drawner comp from ebay for round bout 230 when i remember right...good to kno you like that warm audio comp so..but see wa76 and la2a.. the good stuff is from the past...i kno warm audio is new stuff but they almost build like in past
btw i have read the boss cl50 is rolands version of the 160a...even cheaper
    -----
yep the acustica bandwagon must be entered i fear...my brain-department of research says few klanghelm, few acustica and few melda plugs is must...meldas auto volume has blown me away on the raw basstation....
im so sick of to much plug's in comp folder....either in vst folder....but im glad warez could sort out all NI dynamic proccessors for me...what a crap..minimal techno processors or what..i dunno...
other thing which amaze me today cause i always said nomad is no good meh...if all the warezriders kno that analog emu vst need -18dbfs...:bash:

I whent ahead yesterday and tested out the DBX and DC8C on a drum bus and later whent and tested it out on the master buss aswell.
both are great sounding to me. there was no clear winner between the two on the track I tested them on.

at the end of the day, It depends on the material.

    my 2cents
