Hi, I was wondering how DAft Punk made the bassline for this song sound so deep ? Is that a real bassline with a lowpass filter ?, can it be made on a vst without a bass ?. What is the best vst for basslines , Trillian ?
Any help would be appreciated. If there are good soundbanks with presets for french house basslines for sylenth, serum or whatever that people could reccomend, I'd appreciate that.

another song with a similar bassline that I like

A few years ago someone asked how to make a sound like this. I made a similar with quite simple FM synthesis and key-tracked LPF and BPF. I used Vember Surge in this, but the same sound can easily be made in Serum or similar.

It's a way to imitate a real bass (precision of jazzbass). So in a way you can use a real bass to get this tone/timbre.

I swear, Baxter needs his own section entitled "Ask Baxter." Any and all sound design questions should go directly to him. He's one of the few members left here who consistently provides helpful responses. Pinkman is another, although haven't noticed him in a while. We're very fortunate to have members like them. Don't remember either of them being rude to anyone else or participating in all of the lame posts that appear to be the trend these days. Just wanted to mention how grateful I am for people like them.

Thanks for your responses, that sounds perfect Baxter, so your using Vember Surge. What kind of effects do you have on the bass, is there any reverb on it ? What kind of compressor are you using , or can you remember ? Do you recommend any tutorials on youtube for achieving that kind of sound or did you just figure it out yourself ?

No reverb. I used the limiter within Surge (FX section) to control the peaks a bit (just a few dB).
I taught myself over the years by sonically analyze what types of oscillators, filters, envelopes, LFOs and effects that was used. Even with layered sounds, which is a bit harder but doable.

I made a replica of my Surge preset in Serum for you. It might sound just a tad off, but play around with macro-knob #1 to get a different tone that might fit:

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for the patch, I don't have a serum up to date enough to use the patch unfortunately.

    Great!
I assigned macro1 to "FM (From B)", so play around with the FM(from B) parameter on oscillator A to dial a timbre that you like.

I dialed in the tone, it sounds awesome thank you. The original one in vemper surge above has a pumping kind of sound, did you sidechain the bassline with the kick to achieve that effect ? Is there any other effects on the original sound in vemper surge, really light chorus or something , it sounds kind of funky and lively even though its so deep.

The beat has swing (listen to the hats) and the bass plays quite a lot of syncopations. Maybe it's what you associate with more "funky".
I used no other effects. Maybe Iadded a bit more 1kHz nasal mid-boost EQ to the overall sound (can't really remember).

It doesn't look like anyone has any sample packs for french house basslines, the sound i got from Baxter was what I was looking for so I'll close the thread and mark as solved. Thanks again to Baxter for the serum preset and all the advice on getting the sound.

Baxter : "A few years ago someone asked how to make a sound like this. I made a similar with quite simple FM synthesis and key-tracked LPF and BPF"

what do you use for a band pass filter , do you use a special plugin just for that ? or is it just the standard plugin in your daw

Easiest is to use the filter within the synth. Most synths have bandpass (and other standard filters). This can be key-tracked, meaning that the higher the note you play, the higher the cutoff frequency will be. With this you can dial in on the desired frequency/character/timbre that you want on one note (nasality, honkiness, clarity, presence, etc) and the "character" will stay with the sound in whatever range you wish to play it, may it be in the bass or up in a lead sound.
