    Hello everyone,

I registered to this forum because i thought this community is really social and such and doesnt want to kill you if you use 1 little crack besides your millions of millions dollars grotesque expensive Kontakt Libraries ect.

Well my english isnt that great but maybe this forum could help me to get better because this place is really neat...And I want to write more.

Anyways... I would like to know what Instruments one of my favorite Game Composer uses and thougt maybe you forum people have an idea... xD

    As an example:
This is the first (windows) game soundtrack from Touhou

    and this is the last

between them lays a lot of time but they are somehow very similar

Lately I was allways asking myself how did he make it like this, all i found on the internet was leading to some hardware stuff but maybe there are some vst who can reproduce this kinda lofi sound.

I didn't listen to it all, but I'd say some GM (General MIDI) sound module or GM VST would suffice. Even some old soundfonts (.sf2 format).

There are very very many soundfonts... Never really cared much for sountfonts but there you really can find new easter eggs. There is something like Roland Sound Canvas but i want to try to keep my options free for the time being.... But all those free SNES or N64 Soundfonts that I found are like heaven to me right now.

Many newcomers (including myself) couldn't figure out how the PMs work here but no worries. I sent you one.
find your inbox on top left corner of the site. it says - Inbox # - where # shows the number of unread messages you have.
Do know that each conversation looks exactly like a forum thread but only participants have access to the content. kinda confusing but it is how it is :)

Oh boy here we go, this is gonna be a long one.

From the examples that you've given (EoSD to PCB) what he uses is mainly and I mean mainly the SD-90, though from PCB and onwards he switched to using both the SD-90 and Super Quartet, along with one steinberg product that aimed to be a linn drum emulation called LM2 or something, I don't remember

From IN and onwards it gets a little more complicated than this. Other than Super Quartet and his SD-90, he added Virtual Guitarist from Steinberg too and mainly products from that company (think Cubase, Groove Agent) and the occasional Edirol Orchestral and (as I said earlier) Super Quartet.

If we go by modern...then he barely uses the SD-90 Roland module, only for the famed ZUNpets and such, he now uses a combination of The Grand 3, GA4 (Groove Agent 4), Retrologue and Electri6ity for guitars (though not amped properly...if at all)

Ok that's a lot to take in, but the point is, you want the ones that cover EoSD to PCB and maybe IN? easy then. Get a Roland SD-90, wait, you say you can't get one? don't worry. Sound Canvas VA will do a mostly similar job, but if you are still picky about details. Get the JV-1080 vst as the waveforms are actually from the XV-5080 and the SD-90 being just a toned down GM2 XV5080 with some from the expansion board sets.

In essence, get SCVA (as plenty of sounds are useful), the JV-1080 VST with some of the expansions released in the sister site (as of now two, once World is out, the legitimate ZUNpets too), LM-4 Mark II from Steinberg, Virtual Guitarist also from Steinberg and finally Super Quartet and a DAW for yourself

If you want to have his DAW, then that might be a bit of a tough luck since he uses Cubase now, you can use Cubase 5 just fine since it is still a very good choice, however, it will only be available in 32 bit so you'd need to bridge 64 bit plugins in order to host them first, my personal (and perhaps best) recommendation is to go use Reaper.

Is far more lightweight, speedy and is available in 3 platforms (macOS, Windows and Linux in testing, with the 6.0 release being fully supported Linux in soon...maybe) and has a more or less similar environment to Cubase, but that's your choice in the end.

    That about covers it.

Sorry for late reply and thank u very much for this detailed comment~

Hmm I think I need to pass on Steinberg products especially cubase, cannot afford it.
Well in the end i got the roland sound canvas vst anyway, its really handy. Gonna look for the JV-1080 too.

I worked with fl studio for the last years, but i know reaper, i think its a little complicated for the first impression, but maybe i try to make some music with this DAW soon. Otherwise im really interested in Studio One, but for now i want to focus more on making songs with the DAW I already have.

BTW I don't really want to copy zun, i just want to make fitting music for similar "lofi games" and maybe some touhou like music for fun.

The old touhou soundtracks (1-5) are very interesting too, looking for a similar vst. It sounds a lot like old sega genesis (or mega drive?) music...
Maybe I buy http://www.alyjameslab.com/alyjameslabfmdrive.html but maybe someone here has another idea.

Thank you all for all your helpful answers!
