It is tough to be a violin luthier these days with companies like Yamaha and all the Chinese imports selling their products for a loss. I really don't know how you can compete with Yamaha's Student Series violins, and there is only so much money you can make on re-stringing and setups.

Most students never really play past high school so they really don't need anything better than a Yamaha AV5 or AV7, and a luthier can't really build a better instrument for under $1,000. Once you get to the $10,000+ price range you have far too many extremely talented luthiers with far more experience and history than you to contend with so you can't really make money there either. Perhaps there is money to be made in the $2,000-5,000 range but again your mass produced competitors are likely going to offer a better sounding violin for half as much as you. Unless you live in Germany or Europe, people ignorantly think violins produced there sound better, then you will find it quite hard to make a living in this profession.

I completely understand the challenges you're facing in the violin-making industry. It's true that with companies like Yamaha and the influx of Chinese imports, the market dynamics have shifted, making it more competitive. The affordability of mass-produced instruments can be enticing for many players, especially those just starting.
