making music, composing music has everything to do with physically playing an instrument, regardless whether it's a guitar or not. EDM has everything to do with programming and nothing with music...I mean, gimme a break here: a 'humanizer' function to make stuff sound like it's been actually played???? It sounds like a computer and it will always remain sounding like that. Music has to do with laynig down intention and imperfection and that says a zillion times more than those fucked up perfectly drawn blocks in your midi grid or your autotune altered voices that go outside the scale once too often. That's what you get when people who have no musical talent go messing about with composing music. It's like twelve year olds walking into the prom night trying to impress all the girls pretending they have a ton of experience and being well endowed while everybody knows and sees they're twelve year olds pretending they're mature but still can't hide they have small dicks once they drop their pants.....enough said?

here is one example that billions of people have listened to since 1973

that song is 45 years old!

the downward spiral came out to the mainstream exposing millions to every possible electronic sound.

that was 24 years ago!


there is nothing but tiny changes to today's electronic music compared to years in past. changes in the "icing on the cake" such as production, thats all that is different.

don;t get me wrong , im not saying i don't like electronic music i been listening to it since i was born. but to think of it as "new" and "modern is a bit bizzrre to me when foster911 says

the "timbre" of an instrument makes up about 1 percent of my satisfaction in music foster911.

for example , "modern" guitar players can do electronic music Better then electronic music.

 

But don't forget future ... future is always a good start. Future FDM?

I'm now mostly a synth guy but, I play guitar, not very well but guitar runs through my veins. (I am a bass player but please don't hold
that against me if you're a guitarist ;)
There's more to the question, like greatly emulated guitar shreds and some cool guitarsynthing, if thats a word. And all the wonderful posts

Given the quantity of off topic comments, I may have made a mistake... If it's the case I apologize.

 

I know people that play an instrument exceptionally well and they can also program synthesisers. They use both together often and at times seaparately.
The music they create is music.

Music is good or it is not. It does not matter whether the musician has used their ears to play or used their ears to program.
Sure there are many who cannot play an instrument at all and that is a topic I\d rather not debate.
If what they put out is musical and good, who is to say they have no talent? Not me.

I appreciate art for its own sake. I do not expect anyone else to feel the same because that is a personal choice.

 

I'm a guitarist and have been listening to electronic music since the early 70's.
In these times I listen to streams of what would I suppose would be termed downtempo, trip hop, lounge, art rock. ambient, chill, etc.

However I've drawn a line in the sand concerning what is mostly known as EDM and inclusive of all its sub genres that contain abrasive noises and loud obnoxious irritating 4/4 pulses. By comparison a jackhammer to the skull is a far far better pleasurable experience. I mean, if you're all jacked up at some club and want to spazz out, that stuff is appropriate. But music?? Hail nooooo.

There was a cartoon I found once. It pictured a large hanging bell, with a bunch of people standing inside. Outside was this guy with a huge hammer ready to strike the bell. Caption underneath said, "The very first techno rave." That pretty much sums it up for me. lol

I also find the amount of new EDM sub genres that seem to pop into existence every week comical and absurdist.

All these chains of arguments are leading in the wrong direction.
They only mean: "my music is better then your music... I'm better than people hearing this kind of non-music... For being so foolish not hearing what I call music, one ought to be condemned."
It has been the same with other forms of art. Andy Warhol wasn't accepted to be a artist at all in the beginning. What has made him an artist wasn't his high level of artistry, it was what the people thought about it was. And they thought it was artistry indeed.

I don't like EDM and Warhol, they just do nothing with me. But who am I to be a witch hunter. For me, even those people are human being, who like to listen to EDM.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this case, the ear.

I'm quite sure in a hundered years (I suspect much earlier) a lot of people will call music, what a computer has "constructed/programmed" by his own. So what if we just turn it off, if we don't like it?!

 

I believe it's just a form of adaptive mutation. It's the only explanation as to why a brain would find what basically comprises of otherwise excruciatingly irritating grating pounding noises a pleasant experience.

Sure, you can say its 'all in the eyes of the beholder'. Then again there are people who find human excrement and vomit highly arousing and pleasurable. But let's not make the mistake of giving it equal measure for quality.

Joseph Beuys, a highly acclaimed "artist", wasn't far away with "Fettstuhl" a pun in german language (fat-stool is a consequence of a liver desease) or "Honigpumpe", a bathtub with a valve instead of a drain.

Most of these works could be done by a 10 year old kid. No artistry involved at all IMHO. But they pay $$$ for it today. Compare this with EDM if you will.
So, you're quite right Sir, sadly. But that's just an opinion.
What's called "art, music ..." is and ever has been defined by a majority. Today this majority in music is the average 13 year old girl, because she actually buys music.
