m40x does not have the extra low extension that the m50x has. ....from what I've read in the past.

Get the M50x and call it a day. I use them for both Monitoring and Mixing. They do a great job in all departments. A pretty well rounded work horse. You won't be sorry.

  4. I don't have the 770's but have used them. It is really down to a matter of personal taste, and what @Sylenth.Will.Fall said, trying them both out before finally deciding is a goodly piece of advice.

I have been using the ATH-M50x or it's predpredecessor for about maybe 12 years or so. The ear pads do suck big-time, but since I swapped them out with cushy maroon colored velour ones they feel like totally different cans, in a great way. The supplied ones suck hugely as they are sweat making machines, crack and become fugly (fucking ugly) fairly early in their lifetime. Repetition breeds familiarity in regard to how they translate from system to system, so for my way of thinking, as long as you get to know any piece of gear's idiosyncrasies it might not matter what you use as your reality becomes THE reality after a time.

If you can afford two different pair, a closed back is of course better for tracking your vocals and the open surpass the closed for mixing (if you for some reason can't use monitors). Anyway that is the...

well, i ended up getting the m50x. i'm pretty happy with them so far, but still adjusting. i had shure srh440 cans before this, and although they did not have as wide a range, they did have a slightly wider soundstage. and the m50x are a bit tighter on my head. but they do have more detail and they seem to be a little flatter across the frequency spectrum.

For anyone else reading this as a decision helper:
    Wearing comfort is often underrated.
You'll find out when you're working a few hours with the headphones on.
People with larger ears have less choice in headphones and need larger ear pads.
This alone can take the ATH Mx0 out of the equation, as the 770 fits larger ears too.

  8. The ATH M50X fits me no problem, but then again, I have a

How about the K240 guys? I recently just ordered them for 59$. From what i read, those are a bargain for what they offer (?)

You can go cheaper if you want and buy a Superlux HD681. You basically get what you paid for. Don't expect high clarity and detail from it. Use sonarworks or morphit to eq it.

I am not a big fan of the audio technica ath series (m60 and smaller). They "hammer" the sound into your head. One of the worst soundstages I ever experienced.
I recently had the pleasure to listen to a (slightly moded) Fostex T50RP mk 3. This orthodynamic (planar magnetic) headphone is my new favorite in the <=150 bucks range. Already ordered one, need it in my collection.

Edit: Actually, I listen to the T40 (closed version). I ordered the T50 (semi open versersion)...

50Ohm and only 92dB could be a bit too less.
