    Hello dear community!

I think this is my first post so bear with me! I'm a fan of film music and massive attack. I'm working on merging both. So far, so good! Now, I do understand the musicality and the notes behind Massive Attack's music but I'm having BIG trouble finding the libraries in Kontakt (or tweaking them) to produce most of the polished and dedicated sounds I hear in their songs.

Any Massive Attack fans or listeners who could point me to Kontakt libraries, vst synths or whatever is necessary to get as close as possible to the sounds? I need these same sounds to start with. Hopefully, by tweaking them further I could go in a more personal direction. I wish I was good with ADSR and synthesis but Im not!

    Thanks for reading!
Keep this great great site alive!
    Cheers

For the exact sound, i dont think you'll find it anywhere, cuz it's highly improbable that they would use Presets in their sounds.
still you can approach that by Identifying the type of sound, it it's a synth or what kind of piano etc... and scroll through Kontakt libraries and try and find similar sounds.
    Hope that helps

Start sampling! That's what they did (and made it an artform). You are looking at/for the wrong thing if you are looking for presets. :)
Edit: Been a big Massive Attack fan since the 90's.

Yeah, that's exactly what commercialization (repetitive force-feeding with faulty "infomercials") of everything done to anything. The real deal casual thought; not to purposely autosuggest his own mind/reality.. can now easily lead one to "think", that.. wo serious brain-hacks.. pvc prepacked, chemically, thermally.... treated, instant microwave "cordon bleu".. can be.. "as close as possible" to "fine dining restaurant" one. Long way and a fair sum to spill.. only to (find) buy disappointment.

Finding (a way to find) your own, hidden inside - good, old, commercially resistant - vodou (not copy-paste creativity) "in blood", could be more than helpful. Or vice versa, in case....

One of the better trip hop tutorials, its shown in Reason but principles are applicableto any DAW. Shows the many different approaches as mentioned earlier on this post. Highly recommend! Cheers :dj:

notremid's vid puts together a really cool trip hop vibe and Reason looks like a great starting point giving the classic sounds and effects used for what you're looking for.

wasgedn's vid is great as well, the deconstruction starts around 9:17.

Massive attack always talks about using hardware and vintage samplers and the way they process each sound is really a big part of their signature style. Take note of the effects processing mentioned in these vids:thumbsup:

If you really get into it vintage samplers and hardware is a must for this style!!

A big Massive Attack fan and a Trip Hop/Soundtrack producer here!

I never tried to make the same style of MA in my music, but they certainly influenced me, and I know they used some presets/samples.

For example for "Teardrop" they used a heavy piano key combined with a pad, all that is one sample that comes from Twisted Textures library by East West, you can find some nice pads/soundscapes similar to the MA style in there.

They also sampled some beats from other artists as you know, but I have seen that the style of those grooves are present in some drum libraries as well, there is for example Vinilistics and Wall of Vinyl by Big Fish Audio, Return From The Planet of the Breaks or Total Rex by Zero-G, and some others mainly from 90's.

But more importantly is what they sampled and how they did it. You could do that but better not have trouble with other artists so you can try making your own or using and modifying samples from libraries, I suggest you to search for sample libraries from the 90s, there are some that still sounding beautiful today.

And please keep your Dynamic Range as good as the 2 first albums, one of the reasons that makes these 2 first albums so enjoyable is that their dynamic range was very well preserved so you could FEEL every snare hit, every kick hit, every note, etc. That why "Protection" is almost always my audio reference when I master a track, even if is of another genre. Cheers! :grooves:

EDIT: I just searched for the sample I mentioned before and seems like is possible that the library actually took the sample from the song :woot:
