Have you run them within a x64 DAW or within a 32bit DAW.
I switched to 64bit daws a long time ago. whenever I need to fire up an older 32 bit plugin by having it wrapped into jbridge things get dirty and unstable.
Have you found a better solution?

There's really only so far you can take a certain concept, after that it just becomes various flavorings or specialty "gimmicks" for odd occasions. A rock is better than your fist, and a hammer is better than a rock, but... where can you go from there? Sledge hammers? Good for stakes, not so much for nails -- a variation, not really an improvement.

So, standard hammers are pretty much the same as they were when my grandfather was a kid. Likewise, samplers are pretty much the same as they have been since Gigastudio or Emulator X3. Mixers still mix. Convenience and cost may be different, but all the bread-and-butter stuff is all the same sonically.

    You speak my language then!
yes you will love reaper then!

    Sonic foundry kicked ass
    [IMG][IMG]

    and now

    https://www.reaper.fm/

of course ACID pro 8 x64 is coming in spring..............

    https://www.magix.com/us/music/acid/

but now i been using reaper for a decade and can do anything with reaper even my own code, so i dont know if i will switch back to acid who knows lol
as of right now the aux, busses and routing options in reaper destroy acid unless they revamp it ( even if it was x64 but identical to acid pro 7)

for me first a 32bit daw is uncalled for offensive.
next even if a daw is x64 it must have unlimited routing through aux and busses
next be able to customize every aspect of the daw and modify with your own code
if a daw cannot do these things it is outdated to me.

If you're a builder, try these:
if a mechanic, one of these
    [IMG]
Big construction had (has?) some free-piston diesels hammers (pile drivers):
    industrial revolution? These hammers:
But hammers aren't anywhere as essential as they once were: we now screw, or weld, or glue, or injection mold etc., things that once meant hammering; figured out that making stuff != hammering.
    [IMG] Progress! :)

    Point is:

If I was redoing some decorative trim and used a hammer, no one would look at me strangely. If I was using a rock, someone would say, "uhh... why aren't you using a hammer?" Hammers certainly aren't outdated for average Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Jane Citizen -- everyone knows how to use them, low-maintenance, low-cost, easy to store, etc. All the hammers you pointed to are specialty hammers which are overkill for the average person -- most people wouldn't even identify those as hammers.

Progress does exist, of course. You can say, "figured out that recording/production != hardware", but the end result of using Roland D50 hardware versus the Roland D50 VSTi is going to sound almost indistinguishable (close enough for the average person, at any rate). The software doesn't make the hardware outdated sonically, although one can certainly argue that hardware is outdated from a workflow perspective.

Now, you can argue that trends in taste have changed and therefore some presets in a DX7 sound dated, but is FM synthesis outdated?

On a different note: Perhaps there is a distinction between obsolete and outdated. And are we discussing in terms of workflow, sonics, or style?

Because surf guitar technique sounds outdated to me in terms of style trends (although maybe making a comeback!), but the guitar and amp themselves still sound relatively modern when divorced from any given style or technique. Also, the workflow of Fender Strat + Fender amp/cabinet is still modern if you're gigging, although it could be argued the amps/cabs are bordering on outdated due to impulse responses and other modelling.

Musically... Player pianos? Don't sound outdated, but technologically obsolete (well, the idea of paper rolls versus MIDI controlled).

    Word!

Sonar runs 32 and 64 bit plugs side by side with no problem. No j-bridging needed. I'd assume there are other currently developed DAWs which do this as well. I kind of prefer it when a DAW will keep compatibility with at least the previous type of tech instead of completely abandoning it. Primarily for the reason of discontinued development on certain plugins.

But we're not average people, we're [going by the somewhat confusing name of this forum] professionals of some sort. We're not tacking on decorative trim, we make new stuff:wink:
Don't mean to argue that hammering stuff (or, in your example, FM synthesis) is outdated, merely that today we have more (additive, wavetable, everything, etc.) to choose from. Some of these are simpler (quicker) to work with, were developed with today's music in mind (just like nail guns are developed with ...idunno, roofers in mind; you can still put up a roof with a $5 claw hammer, but...

TL;DR: I don't think sound could be obsolete. Some stuff might sound dated (not old enough 4 retro cool, too old 4 new/cutting edge), but sounding dated could be made to work on some levels too. Was just riffing on "Claw Hammer: Pinnacle of creation, or another evolutionary cul de sac?" thing:hillbilly:

I think this is the whole point I am trying to make here. It can be NEW STUFF made from old tools. Two different people could sit behind the same old drum kit, but one could do the same old thing and antother could sit down and make a brand new gem. It's about how you use these tools, not how old the tools are. It's ironic that examples were made in this thread about same old drum sounds....... The innovation of the drummer is what will shine, not the drums. New stuff can be made with an old hammer.

I just wonder if somehow people think that because they are using the latest and greatest if THAT is what will make their work shine as new. Way too much emphasis is being put on the latest and greatest, and not nearly enough emphasis is being put on the creativity. Amazing NEW things can happen with tools that are thousands of years old in design.

Since I use AP mostly as an editor (I don't even use loops much anymore) it kind of hurt my purpose for editing, when Sony decided to put the title of the track in the work area! I often need to zoom in and find the best place to edit to avoid pops where the wav crosses the zero axis line, and it gets in the way to have the name of the track in the work area! What were they thinking? It's why I use such an old version. I can quickly zoom in and not have the name of the track in my way. I know what the name of the track is. I don't need it in the work area.... Otherwise I would be using AP 7. Looking forward to see what's new in 8. It's now from Magix is it not? Sony no longer owns it?

The one thing we don't hear anymore is songs finishing in a fading loop. That sounds old nowadays.
