Does anybody know of any VST plugins that are not compatible with Windows 7 and only compatible with 8 or above?

Also, what are the benefits of Windows 10 over 7 for making music? Are there any?

Should have mentioned... I'm looking at Downgrading from 10 to 7, partly because of the FLS limitations in Windows 10.

I went from XP to 7, missing out rubbish like Vista etc. I plan on keeping with 7 until it falls apart. I have yet to find a VST plugin not working with 7 (Unless because of MAC or Linux)

I am happy keeping to what I know, because what I know, works well.

well i have been using win 7 since it first came out, but i built a new pc and had to upgrade to win 10 because of the motherboard which only supports win 10, before i built the new pc i upgraded to 10 over 7 and it works gr8, so i took the plunge and went for it on the new system, which is aorus z370 mb, i7 8700k, 32gb corsair vengeance black led ram, gigabyte geforce 4gb 1050 ti gpu, and antec cooler, win 10 runs just gr8 and im glad i upgraded, everything just works better, and i have had no issues with any vst plugins, all work gr8 and some i bridge with j bridge for some older plugs, so go for it

it's a lot of work reinstalling all software when you upgrade to a new Operation System. I will not upgrade when Windows 11 comes out. Hope that one day you can keep all installed software when upgrading a OS. As to compability it has more to do with the DAW software and if windows is 32 bit or 64 bit. I'm not sure but I think all 64 bit vst will work on all systems that has 64 bit DAW/windows software. As far as I know windows xp was the first system that used 64 bit, so if you get an modern updated DAW to work on windows xp 64 bit all 64 bit plugins should work.....I think
Windows xp 64 bit probably has to be updated with a lot of Visual C++ redistributable packages and service packs...a lot of tweaking a would imagine

Win 10 is *supported by M$*, for one. 7 only gets security updates (which will also end in 2 years). Developers (drivers, software) also tend to give the curent OS priority (over 7, XP & DOS).
You mean this https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms682661(v=vs.85).aspx ? Nothing has changed since Win XP, afaik. Not sure why this would be an issue.
Edit: If you do wind up OS-rolling, simply install another OS on another HD, or make another partition & dual-boot (https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/how-dual-boot-windows-3633084/ is the first Google result). Lets you (sorta) compare.

    This... https://www.gearslutz.com/board/mus...ws-pro-production-fls-limit.html#post13146442

Apparently they cocked around with Windows 10 and put a limit on VSTs to 128 unique threads that wasn't present in Windows 7. Its not as simple as 128 plugins because some use multiple threads apparently.

Not sure what the guy's talking about. Since he doesn't cite his sources & no one else in that thread has any issues, assuming the fault lies with OP, i.e. user problem.

P.S. DAW != one thread. We have ̶f̶l̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶c̶a̶r̶s̶ multi-core CPUs, operating systems that know how to use them, and multi-threaded DAWs now.

I don't think so. I think this is correct, but it seems like Windows is pushing something of its own and forcing Developers to get with the program, which feels a lot like the Apple way of doing things with their updates. If this goes ahead it might wipe out Windows 7 if that can't handle the new Dynamic thing, whatever that is (can't be bothered getting right up to speed on it all, its headache stuff and pointless knowledge to me in the grand scheme). There's a lot of info to be found on it if you search. Check this thread...

Can't argue with that logic, but our MS oppressors are not to blame -- they're but powerless pawns in the hands of teh True Masters, our Beneficent Reptilian Overlords. Who are really ..? Yeah, you got it, time machines! I think a lot about this kind of stuff.

I Worked for 3 years on Windows 7 which I still have on a computer and still works like in the day of installing. On the other PC, in December, I installed win 10, which works great for music, even if the system encountered errors that I never knew they existed. Last night, I allowed shutdown + update of windows. I woke up in the morning to start working at 7AM. Well, the PC updates went in a loop + restarting and I couldn't use my computer until 11.20. You can't imagine the cursing directed to all Microsoft team. Another strange behavior is that after 4-5 hours of working on the PC, files start disappearing from the hard drives. They reappear after restart. Actually entire folders disappear. Some of them are still there but as 0kb. If I try to access it, then the entire folder disappear and doesn't reappear after restart and have to use a recovery tool like Eaeus to bring it back. I checked up for viruses, but there are none. The strange behavior started after the previous update 3-4 weeks ago.
I will install win 7 on this PC too.

    stay away from WIN 10!
I invested more than 100 hrs comparing my well modified WIN7 with any possible version of WIN 10 + Graphicscard drivers.
I even stripped all the bullshit from WIN 10 and tried to have any workable solution, it was always worse than Win 7.

If you wanna know what WIN 10 does under the hood, carefully read this and understand all the small spy items they add:
    https://www.winprivacy.de/english-home/instructions-1/
try this program and see how many bullshit u need to DEACTIVATE.

Dont trust these "i installed WIN 10 and everything works fine" Noobs, they think in loads faster ( which is a HOAX trick of M$) and they compare a newly installed OS with the old bloated win 7 where they even have a ANTIVIURS installed or similar Nonsense.

Again, i made abt 6 new WIN 7 installations and the same WIN 10 on several SSDs and only run the basics like Cubase 9.5 and Omnisphere +Reaper and compared the behavior with latency (NOT the latency of the ASIO drivers!)
watch this to better understandwhat i mean with Latency:

WIN10 performs worse than WIN 7 in latency.
A nonstripped new WIN 10 made like 1000us spikes, after lots of mods i brought it down to under 200.
But Win 7 is under 100 from any new installation.
I hope my Tipps helps, but there are so many factors which can compromise your WIN Installation.
KEEP it as clean as possible and dont upgrade.

You got to always figure that a platform that has been abandoned is about as stable as its ever gonna be. They stopped messing about with it and its undergone loads of tweaks for a long time. This is the other half of my thinking for going back to 7. Seems to be quite stable right now after removing my Cubase dongle and moving to Ableton but as soon as I get some more issues I'll probably jump back to 7, let 10 become stable for a few years and then when its ready for proper use, maybe I'll get back to 10. Took me years to ditch XP for 7 and then only a couple of years back I've taken up 64 bit DAW.

If your computer is necessary I wouldn't ever put it online. I use Linux online and for basic things like watching videos, music etc. I never need anything more than what Linux provides for basic use, so there's no need for Windows online. I've put it on a couple of times when I've forgotten why I don't use it online, laughed for a few minutes at the ridiculousness of it, and put Linux straight back on. Putting the music computer online sounds like throwing knives in the air and seeing where they come back down... eventually one is gonna hit you on the head.

Yeah I've been through all of that. Its a nightmare installing 10. Takes forever working out where they hid everything. If I was online I'd be worried about the spying stuff.

Useful info on 7 vs 10, thanks.

Did you go from 7 to 10? When I tried to reinstall 10 I could only keep the files not the software

Microsoft has a track record of maintaining support of their products for only so long. They are good in publicly letting people know when that support ends. Windows XP to this date has the longest period of support for any of their operating systems until it ceased.
Because of this practice and necessity to create versions that move with the new technology, third party manufacturers and programmers also create new versions to work with the newer operating systems.

It would be nice to have an operating system that you simply upgraded perpetually that maintained backwards compatibility with every update. However this is not possible because of the ever increasing storage changes as well as other components in speed, size, ratio, type and more. It evolves and needs to in order to meet demand.
This can be seen in the changes when 64bit became the standard from 32bit and the resulting issues of backwards compatibility. For everything we gain we lose something. At some point everyone that wishes to do more than just word processing, will need to upgrade whether they want to or not. Fortunately there are people that make for music 32bit wrappers like jbridge as one example that remove some of the issues of change.

Is Windows 10 better for music? It's not dissimilar to Windows 8.1 in how it works. I know people that swear by it and some that hate it. Some people hate the added personal information invasion, some love it. Some find their drivers work better, some have found they had to get rid of some of their hardware and replace it because it did not work in Win 10. At some point, you may not have a choice. Just like software. As an example some newer KONTAKT libraries that only work with versions that are a minimum of a specific version.
To ask if it is better is a question that has positive or negative answers depending on what purpose it is needed for. In this case for music, if you have gear that works in both and you are in a 64bit environment, many things work faster in Windows 10. Many things do not work at all.

You can always try it out safely:

    - Do a full image backup of your O/S HDD and verify it.
    - Install a Windows 10 update which I believe still can be done with Windows 7.
    - If you like it, then keep it.
    - If you hate it do a full image restore and you have lost nothing.
    Cheers

Don't have any problem with Win 7 for me, for now every plug/daw seems to work with their lastest version, but for how long.

I'm not planing on switching to win 10 for now, but I'll do it when I'll updat my setup (because compatibility reason of some new motherboard)

I saw some people using Win 10 LTSB, does that limitation you talking about here is in that version too ?

for my use, I don't think I'll run into this problem as I don't work on really big project - never more than 50 track, usually between 20/30, but still curious, I like to have the possibility to do something even if I'll never do it :)

Hardware and drivers prior to Win 10 seems to be where most people get headaches, especially when Microsoft says it will work.
This is because of the abundance of mainboard types and configurations and Microsoft tends to only test the most common. Most people in audio, video and artsy areas have custom cards that Microsoft rarely test, so people's only hope is that the card maker does not abandon their product and supply new drivers that align with new O/S updates.
