The merits of having an EQ......

....in the efx loop of a guitar amp. It can yield surprising results.
The only difference between the rhythm guitar and lead guitar is the EQ setting. I ' cranked ' 1-2 k like a half cocked wah pedal for the lead while ' carving away ' those frequencies for the rhythm.
For once the two guitars sonically are not fighting each other without the use of post EQ.

Trying different settings to improve on my ' closet super quiet recording ' setup.

  3. Nice playing! The guitars work much better than without the cut at 2K. It could maybe use a bit of processing when mixing to perchance beef it up a little, a wee nod of saturation for a tad girth.

I use this old Ibanez PO9 that I have had for maybe 35 (oh my!) years. It's beat the shit out of. I have no recollection of what heavy, pointy thing gave it that ding on the footswitch, but it still amazingly works. It has a parametric cut or boost, 15dB worth from .750 to 5K and another 15+/- for lows with a rolloff at 75hz and for the high end at 5.6K. No matter what guitar I have used, from my old '73 Les Paul Custom, a '68 Fender Strat, my '87 Steinberger GM2, or my current Jap '79 Blade RH2 with that VSC on board eq, this pedal is the core of my sound because I can sweep that knob until the tone just pops out and can be heard in any context. They have a bunch at Reverb for sale and the current crop looks WAY in better shape than mine. I wonder why nobody is making a parametric stompbox for electric guitars anymore, this is a great thing.

Have you tried pre-Eq before attempting distortion? How is the sound?

You would need an EQ that accept high impedance like @superliquidsunshine 's pedal. It has to be equally beat up too.:)

I use a TC Electronic 1128 which only accepts line level. This is a digitally controlled, MIDI programmable analog 28 band EQ. It has a sweepable, parametric mode which comes in handy for tone shaping.

    Usually around $75 - $100 on Ebay.

Along with the two 57s Fredman style, I experimented running TC 1128's XLR out into a bass ampsim.
the first half has two guitars and bass tracked this way.

  8. I have prefered to eq after distortion even though something like my old MXR Distortion+ and Tubescreamer have tone controls as I can shape the overall sound with it. My Eq is last man in line after time based effects.

What’s really fun is having 2 amps with a split. Feeding one amp a different eq than the other while having both saturate different freq spectrums.

Thanks for the compliment @metaller @beatmagnus . I have been intrigued by this Lydian Dominant scale for a while......
korean Hamer double humbucker -> Peavey Prowler tube combo w/TC 1128 in efx loop -> Mesa Boogie Thiele 1 x12" cab -> two Shure 57s and a new third line from the TC1128 into a Henry Olanga Line 6 Lowdown bass ampsim for the extra lows.

It now gives me a high, mid and low control, without any EQ, for mixdown.

  13. Rightous, thanks! It sounds a lot like an active distortion with a sweepable bandpass filter that my friend made and installed in that old ESP Tele I had.

Christmas is just around the corner, hint, hint Santa.

It's the same pedal that Queens of the Stone Age use

I'd post something worthwhile if I could but I am only a bass player, so it's easier to say that I do not know anything. :winker:

Forgot to track-aligned the two mics to the direct TC1128 + bass ampsim signal.

From my experience anyone that says that generally knows a lot more than they make out.
The fact that you don't play shit is probably a good thing. Cleaning up afterwards would be very nasty.
That made me laugh though, thanks :)
