With the wave of spam the forum has been getting I think that preventing new members upon signing up from posting for at least 2 weeks can serve to deter spammers. Those new members who can be vouched for by a member with all privileges should be allowed to post within the rules. What does the community think?

It might even be better if newcomers posts needed to be approved by a moderator before being published for a few weeks or for a certain amount of posts. I have seen this working on a few different forums.

This wouldn't be full proof but it would avoid a few rotten fruits from the start.

    Hi Tony,

On the poll, I said 'no.'

My reason behind that, is because nearly everyone who joins is a potential friend and asset, and I don't see why, firstly they cannot have the same rights as the rest of us, merely because a few evil lowlifes that wish to ruin things, and secondly, what do we become by assuming the worst in someone just because they are new?

I have had ideas on how to prevent something like that from happening again, but I will run them past Saint. Anyone else with ideas should do the same.

Many people join forums when they have an actual question to ask. Preventing them from posting would only hurt these ones, but not spammers who would just script a fitting wait before spamming.

You might have a point but I believe that trust isn't given but earned: If I want to be your friend, I should behave in a friendly way first and wouldn't expect you to give me everything without knowing who I am.

I thought of that but moderators are very busy as it is.

new members join for a reason the urgency of which will usually not tolerate weeks of delay, think back

You make a good point and so does @tsnssb, however, an answer to the newcomers problems likely would be found in the forum threads. That also will educate them on how to seek answers before asking the same question over and over. In fact, I believe that problems with installation and operation of any vst available on sister site or elsewhere has been extensively discussed here and on sister site. I, therefore, do not think new comers will suffer.

Maybe max posts per day or hours for newcomers? Also delay between new posts could help

Nothing to do with weeks of delay, we're talking about hours at most. And no hard work for the mods either, they can either do the job or give it up, plenty of willing candidates to take their place.

I'd put a small five post count where they go to moderation for approval. If they seem legit after that, well all well and good. If they turn arsehat after the grace period, then it's the same as it is now, catch them when the fail.

It's not rocket science to run and sanction new members to a forum.

Definitely no... We are here to help others ... Just as we have been helped when we were newbies...

Besides, a spammer will just while away his time and then flood the boards when he is allowed to post

    IMHO...

I think moderators have other things to do to approve messages from newcomers.
Maybe there is a way to prevent "flood" in the "create new post" category
Or maybe we can learn chinese

edit : woups ! ..... What Legotron said

  17. If we look at this last spamathon hackattack it was not specific to this site, supposedly many other places were targeted. It was a coordinated effort that was planned, an attack with a plan and not off the cuff. I guess it all depends on how dedicated to that plan, if there was patience enough to overcome an obstacle like a few posts waiting time. For the regular asswipe it also may or not make a difference to need to wait a moment or two in order to be able to post.

Yes, In fact 5 years would be my recommendation. That way they would have enough experience to be asking or commenting on a pro audio forum. LOL! Just joking, please don't troll me newcomers. Seriously though, It is worse than it has been for a long time.

Punish all for the crimes of a few? With that authoritarian attitude Garret S Selters and his Les Paul would have forever ended the future of rock and roll last year.
