Here's my theory for why Hip-Hop has turned into a slurry mess of 808 bass-heavy, synth-pop: sugar.

It starts with millennial Black boys raised on a fructose-rich, junk food diet giving their White, female teachers a hard time in class. Being White--having a socialised inability to empathise with Black boys--and being impatient with hyperactive, pre-pubescent boys, these poor teachers facilitate the over-diagnosis of these boys with ADHD. Of course, the problem is medicalised and now "disrupting the class" can be cured with a pill (or two)--a highly addictive pill.

So, these kids are prescribed all sorts of amphetamines for their ADHD; and then later they need benzodiazepines for the resultant anxiety and depression. Next thing you know they're snorting the Adderall and getting "geeked up" on Xanax. They're exposed to getting high at a very young age--and THEY LIKE IT! (Furthermore, some of their drugs are very sugary promethazine codeine mixed with Jolly Rancher's or Sprite).

Now, listen to their music: it can only be truly enjoyed if you're high. It has slightly sedated synths with a trance-like repetitiveness all the while moving at 160 beats per minute! Notice all the drugs that get frequent mention: Actavis, Percoset, Xanax, MDMA, etc...but, for the most part, no alcohol! Rappers in the past used to go on about Hennessey (especially 2Pac) and Dom Perignon and Möet (especially B.I.G.) but these kids are too young to drink and they were introduced to these synthetic drugs at a young age before alcohol. They look and sound like zombies--nihilistic, depressed, bloodthirsty, slurred speech.

    Don't you think?

Well, Hip-Hop is an American genre. Obviously, I'm talking about America and its infamous "school-to-prison" pipeline.

Wa? Old people don't like the music young whippersnappers listen to? No...
OD'd & choked on his own vomit
Think: Trap = 60s Bubblegum; EDM = 70s Disco (the defining genre of the 70s). This music (much like Big Wheels & Barbies but unlike Geritol & Depends) was made for young people. It's totally normal for grownups not to like it. We age out.

difference is I missed Hendrix... Hank Williams, Bon Scott, Tom Petty, Prince, Morrison,Elvis
and their contributions were somewhat more positive than smog out thuggery... but what do I know ..

I wish they were still around to hear their commentary on current goings on...musical and otherwise

that's why I said cheers to the new.. and I hope they do the drugs and death thing much better than their predecessors
as I don't see anything positive coming from them...and they won't be missed, not by me anyway

I know some people think they have the exclusive right to claim victimhood, and get really upset
if anyone tries to take that away from them.. but this is being done to all boys these days
not just latent hip hop artists that can't sit still in class

  13. There is a whole generation of sickly young people all fucked up from being immuniologically compromised at birth by an overwhelming biological cocktail of injections. Then they, for the very great majority, are bottle fed a dead food powdered mix of GMO grown plant material, man made chemicals, a highly processed garbage masquerading as nutrition. They eat fluoride every time they brush their teeth and drink milk from sick cows. A lot of their food has preservatives that kill their intestinal flora and tear holes in their gut/blood barrier. Way too much sugar added to the aforementioned mix creates fucked up kids who are not grounded, cannot focus, always feel ill with stomach aches, headaches and a plethora of allergies. When they act up at school and cannot concentrate, the same system that directly caused their physical and mental issues says that they have medications to, not cure, but only attempt to mask the symtoms. These meds are addictive.

This is the new pool of artists coming up...in the U.S.

No shit the music is the way it is, reflecting what has been done to them, pain and misery cursing through their bloodstreams. Their souls screaming, their minds buffered by drugs that they have been controlled by since the very day they were born.

Old head vs new head mentality. Nothing more. I fuck with both sides tbh, there are great artists on both ends. Not all the trap out there is full of mumbling bullshit. And not all of the mumbling bullshit is too bad if you give it a chance. I'll admit though, a lot of it does make you wonder, how the fuck are these people so famous for such senseless rap. Guess it's just us in the new generation as a whole, we dictate what is successful, so that's what the artists will make.

I think not, but without going into the 'simultaneous invention' hypothesis.
Hip-hop has the biggest reveneu of the Dutch charts, I would imagine that is the same for several other european countries.

what's interesting about that en why it's relevant, is that US hip-hop isn't topping the european charts anymore as in the good old 50 cent days. as a hip-hop "geek" I feel like it's more relevant what france is doing at this moment then on the other side of the ocean

  18. @Blorg .. "aging out" for the many, not the all. I really like that phrase, did you just coin that?

I don't think it was made just for young people unless specifically not made for "grownups", but rather it is just made by young people just doing their thing. I personally like a bit of everything if it is good. My not liking the message, the content of the art has nothing to do with it's merit of creativity. I proffer credit where credit is due, as well as many other "grownups". What is a grownup anyway, what is the musical and life defining moment when this thing transits from youthful exuberance into the presumed stone wall of closed mindedness?

Just a more scholarly paper/pretentious sounding version of "outgrow."
It's not really closed-mindedness as much as different. Stuff that's profound/urgent/new/relevant to kids is not necessarily relevant to adults. A good chunk of it will seem trite/juvenile. Which is not to say that trap/EDM/fairy tales/cartoons are worthless, or that an adult can't enjoy them -- some can see a World in a Grain of Sand. And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, so why not?
