Awesome! We got our own containment thread. I'll contribute another jazz, my Atonal Free-Time Spoken Jazz Concerto in ɸ # Minor.
The composition is very smart and avant garde, a truly complex, challenging piece that becomes even more complex and challenging the more you listen to it. So don't even try listening without an advanced degree in jazz appreciation from an accredited online jazz academy. You won't understand it. Stick to other musics, which are not smart.

CAUTION: This jazz was composed under controlled laboratory conditions by trained jazz connoisseurs. Do not attempt to Atonal Spoken Jazz at home!

 

@MMJ2017 Thanks for sharing that link, oh man these guys are good! And Carlton's son on bass is impressive!

Unfortunately as a bedroom producer, I find it very hard to record jazz tunes by myself without any interaction with other musicians. Very challenging. So it's not jazz then. OK. On the other hand, there are a few recent successful examples out there of what can be deemed "crossover" ventures, mostly in the electro-swing vein. (In fact my penchant would be to qualify the Audiosex album project not "jazz-tinged" but "swing-tinged" (yeah... whatever that means ).

So yeah... jazz is dead, but occasionally resurfacing on the fringe

a helpful way to use your modes and think about them.

the circle of fifths shows the order of the modes from bright to dark.

we start with Lydian which is sharp 4th (11th)
each time we go to another mode ,one note is flattened.
everytime you go to another mode which flattens a note than the previous, you get darker sound.

What's the point of the Mark Lettieri video... he's just a re-hashed version of Steve Khan (with a little of early John Scofield, Mike Stern and John Tropea)... nothing new OR original. Nice to see a continuance of sorts of a dying art-form but again, it's diluted and un-original. I was also a part of that "jazz continuance/dilution movement" with my music until I realized I was a farce and quit. It took me 27 years to finally figure it out. Now I compose for film and TV where I'm comfortable being a farce with my music and do not feel ashamed doing it. I felt ashamed recording albums and touring the world with my "so-called jazz music" knowing the price that the legends before me paid with their musical lives (literally). Julian Adderly, John Coltrane and Miles Davis... now THEY knew what jazz was because they re-invented it and re-invented it until they died. Jazz is improvisation. A language that people try to learn. But you have to be born into it to speak it correctly. I loved jazz but I rode the coat tails of those who invented it just to make money doing it. I ended up feeling like a junkie... hooked on their drug. I quit "cold-turkey" and now know what "jazz" REALLY was/is.

It's exactly as Oscar Peterson once so eloquently stated: "Some people try to get very philosophical and cerebral about what they're trying to say (MMJ2017!) with jazz. You don't need any prologues, you just play."

To see all these posts by MMJ2017 trying to force his knowledge upon everyone is ultimately, the antithesis of jazz. I hope he is kidding but I feel he is not.

Jazz is not studied OR learned. It is/was played. Either you can or you can't. Everyone else is a fake. You just shut up and play. The truth will be told and heard...

Not only is jazz studied AND learned (berklee anyone ?), it's also the most andvanced and comprehensive music theory corpus since common practice.
Dozens of prestigious schools, countless rich & diverse literature.

One could even say Jazz has become as much a living music theory as a musical genre.

Thanks to musical innovations from way before the Duke and till today.

And this is quite a unique phenomenon in the whole musical landscape history.

 

The Christian theology is deep too (experimented for 2 millennia on misfortunate people) but for now is almost unusable and unserviceable except for unaware folks.

Let me educate you with simple words and short sentences as I know how your ADHD issues can be incapacitating :

Every professional studio musician has, at least, basic jazz musical skills on top of whatever their initial training was made of, even though they don't actually play jazz tunes in the end.

Like almost all engineers know their maths.

And by "basic" I mean, internalized thousands of licks, scales modes and modal interchange techniques, sub Vs tricks, chords obviously, and so on.

Jazz lives in every professional studio, even if jazz is not the final musical genre, through the playing techniques of skilled musicians.

Jazz has become an indispensable musical corpus even though the musical genre per se tends to become more and more marginal.
