Hi everyone,

a few questions for the more experienced among you concerning the way Ableton handles MIDI:

1 Can I use the velocity of a note I hit to control the precise amount of a Send (velocity 1 = 0%, velocity 128 = 100%).

2 Can I use several different MIDI-notes for control over the same parameter (Ableton erases the first when I set a second to the same parameter)? My example here is using 4 different notes to set the same parameter to 0%, 30%, 70% and 100%.

3 Can I use one MIDI-note to control multiple parameters? Say access 2 Sends with the same MIDI-note?

4 Is there a way to do MIDI-mapping for instruments in Ableton? I discovered the "scale"-MIDI-effect, but it's not useful to change the mapping for my drums.

5 Is it possible to use an audio signal to control MIDI? For example - can I use the dB-amount of "track 1" to control some Send-button? So if track 1 is silent the Send would be 0%, if it gets louder the Send-amount would rise with it. (Basically some kind of "MIDI-Sidechaining")

Specifically I would like to get my Akai MPD218 to work as a foot pedal with finer controls than "0 or 100%". But I also want to understand MIDI in Ableton better.

I don't know what just happened but while trying to comprehend your post I suddenly understood all of the side stories and plot twists of Game of Thrones. Anyway I think some of your questions can actually be resolved with a little enginuity.

 

I own two Akai Mpd's (the old ones) and use midiox all the time to change how they behave. For example, I've programmed two faders to act as pitch-bend wheels. I don't have the time to answer your questions right now, but I bet you can achieve most of what you want using midiox. Plus it's free for personal use <3

Hey SwingSwing, your English is great as you were able to explain your concepts well but you've asked a lot of complicated questions, some of which is not capable with MIDI but to answer them all would take a lot. Hopefully someone better can step in and help you more here

 

The stock m4l device "expression control" lets you assign velocity to any parameter of anything.

Install that niftly little tool clyphx and you can do that using clips.

Absolutely. Use expression control and map it to the input of the stock m4l device "multimap", where eight parameters may be mapped to. If you need more than eight, just map one of those to the input of yet another multimap and so on.

I don't get what you need - you want to assign drums to different notes than they are assigned to by default? Then, in the drum rack, activate chain view and the I/O view, there you can change what note triggers the sound (recieve) and what note should be played (play).

What you want is the stock m4l device "envelope follower"
