    Hi there !
how do I extract the sequence of midi notes from the FM8 arpeggiator in cubase 5?
if I play with the midi keyboard I will record only the note(midi) i've pressed and I will hear all the sequence from FM8 arpeggiator
while I would also like to record all the intervals of the notes (midi) in the pianoroll and use the same sequence with other vst
    thank you

    Hi my friend!
I don't think it's possible. Synths' midi-routings are internal and no way to extract them.

In ableton live, you could create a new midi track, set the fm8's track as midi input for the new midi track, record, done.
I don't remember if that kind of routing is possible in cubase but I would think it is.

    ^That. Or something like LoopMIDI
Fruity Loops has weird internal routing (you can route a sequencer to a VSTi, but can't record that VSTi); routing through LoopMIDI works great though.

FM8 VSTi doesn't spit out it's arpeggiator as midi notes.(unluckily enough ; there have been many requests for this feature).
So no matter what DAW you use, Cubase included, you won't be able to "grap" FM8 arp midi out, cause it's simply not available.

    Warm Regards.

Don't know if Cubase 5 has Variaudio...

If your Arp sequence is monophonic... you could bounce it to audio... then use Variaudio to extract the notes and then render a MIDI file of that sequence.

Of course... if you have Melodyne 4, you could even extract a polyphonic MIDI sequence.

When using Live, you don't even need Melodyne.
Record FM8 output as audio clip, right click on it > Convert Melody to New MIDI Track. Works quite well.

Why not just manually enter the pattern into the DAW piano roll? Yes its more work but it doesn't take that long.

Really? What if its a polyphonic arp? Like a rhythmic chord sequence... Can Live detect notes in polyphonic sources?

    If so, thats great!

i believe it doest, "convert audio to midi" still this feature is not perfect, but very good. try to use a sound with not too much harmonics and/or distortion. that will help.

It is! Make sure you select "Convert Harmony ..." in that case.
Of yourse it's always possible to make both Ableton and Melodyne fail, and certainly Melodyne is better overall, but it's fantastic for something included "just like that". Play around with FM8's low pass filter to improve chord recognition.
