I can't figure out how to get my toms, in what I assume are tom samples in this fill, to sound like this. It's been days. I Just can't get it. I think I hear some nonlin style verb going on so that's what I've been trying. It's hard enough for me to imagine the source sound alone due to the overwhelming verb and it seems that will really effect the resulting verb sound for the most part, or so I gather from running tons of toms samples trough different nonlin style verbs, (Altiverb, Valhalla vintage and ubermod) trying in serial and in parallel. I can't even get the tom samples alone to have that airy almost no bottom sound, like it's almost all skin, for lack of a better description on my part, without killing it completely.

    I could be completely wrong.

Any ideas people? What would be a decent source to start with? What do you suggest EQ wise? Any other ideas are welcome. I'm stumped.

This I want to learn to do.

No surprise you didn't get that sound. I tried to lower the center with m/s volume but this was not satisfactory, then a lowcut with an m/s eq which was better and last I had the idea just to invert the phase on only one side and now I think you can hear the problem. These are no normal toms, these are (a bunch of) percussion sounds.

So I'm pretty much screwed on this coming at it from that angle then as finding these particular sounds would be a nightmare. Maybe I can synthesize them. :dunno:

hmmmm. BE MINDFUL OF VOLUME IF YOU LISTEN TO THIS FILE.

I think you will find the basic sounds in more than one percussion library that covers the movie staff. But, depending on how many of these sounds you will use/need, it will take some processing and thus time to make 'em sound like this (eq, compressor, lowcut, reverb).

What about these tomtoms in the background @ 1:17?

    Or like the ones attached.

They both sound on the thinner side but 2 more so. I been trying to cut the lows (hpf) but I end up killing it. These somehow manage to do that but there's still a sense of depth. What's the trick to these 80s style toms?

Sounds like saturated/compressed tom sounds with a plate gated reverb to me, just my thought though.

Driven Emulator or Linn drums with of course, plate reverb.
Rverb is EQ'd & may be the actual driven/saturated sound.

  9. Isn't there a plug-in called something like "De-verb" or something where one can get rid of unwanted reverb in a recorded track? Just pulling a rabbit out of the hat.

Interesting idea @superliquidsunshine. If that's possible it could shed some light as to what they did to the samples/toms themselves, if anything.

@quadcore64 Emulator? Emu Drumulator? Also, are you saying the drive/saturation may give the toms that character? Did I get that right?

    Yes. Emu Drum Emulator.
Yes the machines back then had a somewhat dirty sound due to technical limitations. Producers tended to use this as tool
and drive the signal at one or more points to get their signature sound.
