For several years, I've been trying to solve a problem with USB devices and was wondering if anyone else had the same problem and found a cure for it. Firstly let me say that I'm a bit anal in the fact that I like things just so, in my studio. I have ran in the past several variant's of PC's with several versions of windows 7, legal and non legal. everything works as it should perfectly, until I plug in the USB lead into My Line 6 POd HD to edit via the computer. Everything still works perfectly, that is until I switch the computer off, it then hangs on the windows closing screen, and the only way of switching it off is to reset it and disconect the USB to the line 6 pod, I'm then able to switch off the PC.
I assumed that it was the poor line 6 drivers that were causing the problem, and forgot about it, leaving the USB lead disconnected. Yesterday I bought a Digitech RP360 guitar effects unit that has a PC editor, and I'm now getting the same results, all fine if I disconnect the USB lead. I've read somewhere along the way, that some third party USB units that don't have an on/off switch can cause this...has anyone else had this problem and have solved it... it a problem that's been driving me nuts for a few years

I've got a PC that hangs on reboot/boot if there's a USB drive in any port. I'd assumed that was due to it being set to boot off USB if present. Do the devices (POD/RP360) appear as a drive after you connect them? Maybe turn off "boot from USB" settings in the BIOS?

one thing i would try is un-installing the drivers for the individual usb drives of your pc in the device manager, tick delete drivers of the unit if available, uninstall and reboot then maybe even uninstall the usb root/hub if possible and reboot.

they will reinstall automatically and hopefully re-order and solve problems.
if you ticked for delete drivers you will have to download that specific driver again, easy thing.

it has helped me a couple of times.

Regarding deleting the USB drivers, I did that with no luck, worth a try though, also regarding the boot from USB. It's not a boot item,it's always booted from cold fine, it's when I go to shut down the PC, with the USB leads connected to the units, it then hangs on the Windows "shutting down screen".

First off, I've never encountered this problem on any of the audio PCs I've assembled, so this is a very interesting topic for me. I also always enable "legacy USB" in the BIOS because you never know when someone will connect an older 1.0/2.0 USB flash drive, keyboard or mouse into it. It's a very helpful option to have. Sometimes you cannot boot from USB FD, or your mouse/keyboard won't work [until the OS has booted] if that option is disabled.

However, I also thought you might have to deinstall USB drivers from Windows and let them install and "refresh" themselves again. It also occurred to me you might have to disable "legacy USB" in the BIOS, too. Since the first option didn't help, maybe try disabling the legacy USB in BIOS, then? One more thing occurred to me: have you tried un-mounting the USB device from Windows Systray before shutdown? That is one thing I also do as a habit from good old XP, for "just in case". :) It could be a good habit.

One thing I also do on my PCs regarding USB is clean unused USB devices from "Device Manager" that can accumulate with time, like many different USB flash drives, external USB drives and devices that are not in use any more because I've read something years ago about Windows having a problem with too many USB devices entries in the registry. You have to do the same thing with unused MIDI devices as Windows only supports 10, but the less garbage in Windows Device Manager/Registry - the better anyway. To be able to see all the unused USB devices in the Device Manager you first have to do this: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/show-non-present-devices-windows

    Cheers!

p.s. gosh, I remove the redundant USB FD/HD entries from my Linux and OSX machines, too, although I think it's unnecessary. It must be purely Windows problem, but old habits are hard to kill, eh?

Good evening gentlemen, firstly I would thank you all for your input on this subject. Secondly let me say sadly that none of your suggestions has worked, so I'm still open to suggestions. Thirdly I tried the line 6 Pod on another computer, running win10, and this had the same results " hanging on the windows shutdown screen" So its back to pulling the plugs before powering down. Thanks once again for your input.

@jefft, which version POD? What version firmware/driver, etc. All the latest from Line6? Seems like quite possibly a driver issue. Also, did you install the Line 6 drivers prior to plugging it in, or did you just plug it in and let Windows find the drivers for you? I quickly looked at the Line 6 support pages, but don't have enough info to really proceed further there.
@SineWave, agreed, I've also never had to disable this. Like you say, it's a good feature if it's working correctly!

digitaldragon, the pod Hd is no longer supported by line 6, I have the latest software and drivers, still no luck, I bought a Digitech. RP360, which is similar to the Pod HD,got all the latest drivers and software, this gives the same results hanging on shus down. This happens on a fresh install of win7

@jefft, sounds like you've looked at everything I would have looked at already. Let me scratch my head on this for a day or so. If I come up with anything, I'll check back in. I wouldn't want to be constantly unplugging just to shut down out of consideration of what and tear on the Jacks involved.

I have a USB hub that does this, but it has a power button, and once it's powered off, windows will shut down.
I have plugged all the other devices i have that do what you described into this hub then just switch off the hub at shutdown and everything is fine.
Not the most elegant solution, but it works ;)

    Hive mind at work!

I'm starting to think we're barking at the wrong tree, though. It might be antivirus or some other software that works in the background, maybe? Try disabling some of those @jefft. Since @GangamStyle mentioned a USB hub, do you use a hub? Hubs can be really tricky, especially if not powered.

Just throwing some more ideas into the basket!

I've tried different USB leads, in different USB sockets and hubs all with the same results, as for anti virus, I dont run one as its a home studio not connected to the net, for personal use.Now here's something, if I switch the pod off ( It has an on/off switch) then the computer switches off, but the new Digitech 360 doesn't have an on/off switch, so i have to disconnect at the mains. the only solution I can see is to set up a seperate mains line that's easy switchable. Thanks once again for all your help

I'm not a pro at this and maybe it's a silly question but how about "power on by usb" settings?
