    Hey guys,

I'm just starting to work more seriously on producing music (part-time now vs as a hobby before, tops 1 hour a week). Never had the time to properly finish anything or setup VSTs or samples etc. This is the most I've been able to do, and while instruments aren't professional, I feel like the idea is there (or Not even ? haha).

Would love some feedback ! (no samples there, all made from scratch using some drum hits and Massive)

the snare needs more layers, the kick needs more punch, and the bass needs more saturation/distortion.

but as you said the idea is there i like it. it reminds me of anjunadeep

for deep/tech the drums & bass definitely need more punch this way it's more lounge or chillout style.
I like the little perc melody reminds me on Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream

It's not only about the plugins but the way you handle them. Don't try out too many at once, it will take same time to get to know your equipment and get the optimum out of them so they fit your needs.

thanks for the tips No Avenger. Right now I am starting Massive and Analog Lab 2, nothing else. I will go step by step. Any advice on noob mistakes I should avoid ? only hardware I have btw is a Maschine MK2. Thinking of maybe getting a simple Keyboard?

concerning those two? Nope, I don't use them (but not because they're bad)
well I'm not a friend of too simple keyboards (> 100€). You won't have much fun with too cheap keys, knobs or sliders and I would suggest velocity dynamic too. Without you can use your computer keyboard instead. But playing around with dynamics some nice knobs and/or faders can be really fun, interesting and creative.

Advice on noob mistakes: I was asking about production in general haha general things

and for the gear, got it! I will explore as much as I can with maschine mk2 mapped as midi controller and see what can be acheved. If Iam stuck then I will go for more. My problem is any new plugin/gear etc involves a lot of settings/mapping/issues which really demotivates me. I am a geek (computer science degree), but I don't like being stuck in the tech part of things, I really just want to dive into the music and creative aspect of it.

No real secrets there: Spread your sounds around the frequencies and the stereofield, use lowcuts on every sound as high as possible as low as necessary to get a transparent mix, concentrate on the highs you really need and lower them on the rest, use a lot of reverb on only one or two sounds and much less on the others, choose some reference tracks and sound out how they're working concerning frequencies, stereofield and fx, get an analyser.
Try to get every production better than the last one.
    Just the usual staff, mate.
yep, configuring the shit sucks [IMG]
ah, that's great, we can't have enough of them here. so you're the one we can adress with those problems? [IMG]

That's awesome thanks a lot for the tips man, very very useful. Until this week I have done everything by ear (no classical education or anything, just playing around with keyboard) and slowly and slowly went from shit to that little "track". I guess I will develop a method over time, will keep posting stuff if worth it!

    First - Like it!

    some observations:
IF you label your music, do some research (listen). I couldn't care less about labeling "art", but if I read deep(house) or tech(no) these are very defined genres with somehow long history. So I expect to hear something different, which may have a bit of negative impact at the very beginning of listening experience. I'd agree /w No Avenger this goes more to the chill side.
This can be very counterproductive. Choose wisely and learn about every plugin/tool (even before you dl it) what it does and if you really need it at all. You are now in a good position - concentrated on your music and not on endless debates which compressor emu sounds better.
    ^^ Couldn't agree more! LOL!

I miss some lower frequencies, just a tad, to warm things up. But in general like that the music (being repetitive by nature of "style") evolves, has enough movement to keep listener interested.

    Good luck, keep posting!

Agree that it needs more bass cutting through. Really nice insistent groove and reminds me a tad of Plaid. Maybe a sub-bass melody might glue it a bit. I'm no expert but It's got a lot of potential, imo.

Ah it's great to hear all this :) It keeps me motivated to do more! Agreed with the lack of bass and kick...and lack of many things in the track.

Apologies for the mislabelling. I do listen and mix deep house/techno/tech house so I know what the "original" labels meant, but I am myself getting quite annoyed nowadays at how everything gets "mislabelled", especially on Beatport with all the weird "slow" EDM stuff coming out. Next time I will just say electronic music haha

Thanks for all the comments and encouragements. I will keep working on this. weirdly I am "inspired" by a mix of minimal techno (romanian style like RPR) and melodic techno like what all day I dream was 5 years ago. I love the mix of dance/emotion, that's what i'd like to explore

And yes, you will never hear me argue which compressor or gear is "better" haha I only care about the artistic aspect really. And sorry for the disappointment haha I am more on the data analysis/math part of computer science than the software development part of it :D (mental note never to mention it on a forum again haha)

    Don't overthink it.
    Keep it simple.
The musical idea is what counts, production comes second.
    Finish what you start.

Very nice and chill tune here lost_soul. Good first tune for sure man. Just keep on practicing and reading up on & watching tutorials on some, haas delay and long delay, along with other previously mentioned techniques, layering, reverb, eqing, filtering, frequencies an stereo imaging and saturation. Otherwise, just keep them coming...

Don't sweat all the plugins just learn your stock daw Fx first to grasp each of their concepts as tools. Plugins can And will slow you down, especially when you do over engulf into them.

Nice! thanks tek909 I'm glad you like it. I will keep all of this in mind. happy to say iv made more progress watching tutorials about those techniques the last 2 days than over the last year of playing around with ableton.

I will keep working and will eventually get there! Silly question maybe but do you guys do this for pleasure mostly or do you also release, or hope to release your work on record labels?

I have been making noise for many moons. I am still learning. Yes, I have had a few releases, some on, vinyl, some free digital, and non Free digital and vinyl & digital. It's work however. I always have been super passionate but I am also my own worst critic. It can be a very hard thing to put yourself out there. Especially, if and when you put your heart in and get no outside reaction and just further down that rabbit hole of rejection.

sounds good, mellow. the kick should be a bit more fat and punchy, id like if the snare was a bit shorter and snappy with some reverb on it, to give it some a nice mellow/euphoric warehouse type vibe.
