As of now, Some say he is dead, other says he is still alive but won't survive.

They found him unconscious and was hooked straight to a respirator.

damn I didn't know this guy died...

if I recall, he looked as if he should've been... hmm... I don't know... hooked to a respirator since 1985.

Tom Petty, the dynamic and iconoclastic frontman who led the band the Heartbreakers, died Monday. He was 66. Petty's death was confirmed by Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, on behalf of the family.

His hits have defined rock radio since the Seventies, and he never stopped writing great music. Here's the definitive guide to his best songs

"On behalf of the Tom Petty family, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends," Dimitriades wrote.

My top 5 from him (in no particular order). The guy really inspired me as a musician. I listened to a lot of his songs when I learned to play guitar back when I was just a young teenager. Good memories, good times. I was free fallin' but in a good way. I didn't know where life was taking me. Everything was a huge deal to me at the time, and I had less responsibilities so I was also a bit of a jackass too. My impression of myself was highly inflated and I thought I was so invincible. The future was as unpredictable as it got yet I also didn't even worry about it. Later that year he played at the super bowl and I wanted to go see him so bad. But then we saw him from the television and me and my friends all joked he looked like he was dead. But damn, regardless of his old age at the time, that guy still knew how to rock. And I respected him even more for it. Because around that time was when the modern trap music we hear today started to obnoxiously make it's way into view. Then there was me walking around with a walkman CD player listening to my Tom Petty CD that I stole from my dad haha. Great musician, music lost a legend today. Rest in peace, Tom. I'm sure he's rockin' the high heavens already. :guitarhero:

The Music Community has lost yet another of our talented icons. Very sad indeed!

  20. Tom Petty's music has always occupied the throne of rock genre and it led us all by example. It is an intelligent, hard working music that everyone could get behind, the baker as well as the banker, as it tells us stories about ourselves that have enabled us to look in the mirror and see ourselves reflected in his lyrics as well as his melodies, that we could call as well our own as we all sang along word for word, note for note so many of his songs with such familiarity as if that they were our own, driving along in our cars, at his shows or in the privacy of our bedrooms. The man was a living legend and now will live on in our hearts forever.
