Any openbacked cans with offset drivers so they fire into the cup of your ears, just like natural hearing. Not forcing the sound directly into your ear hole. It makes all the difference when mixing for the stereo field with headphones. I have 2 pair of ultrasones, 1 open backed for mixing and one closed for the rec booth/closet.
Proline 2500 Frequency Response (Hz) 8 - 35000 These have the lowest bass I have ever heard in a pair of cans. When I bought these I demoed about 20 pairs on the wall at my local Sam Ash with Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon as my reference. I had my mind set on some AKGs but these were way better and also $100 more expensive. But I can mix in these now and only have to use my sub woofer as a final reference.
    and
    Hifi 650 Frequency Response (Hz) 15 - 22000
These are for recording and what I give to whos in the closet/booth. Whoever Im recording is always commenting about how crispy the monitor channel sounds.

The offset drivers make all the difference. You can hear the separation and spread just like its supposed to sound.

Does Beyerdynamic DT-250 sound more realistic for orchestral music than Audio Technica ATH-M50 ?

I don't have those two side by side, but from various sources M50 were reported to have slight differences in frequency characteristics between left and right channels. That's the main reason I went with DT-250.
They sound very good with orchestral tracks, very revealing, even sub-bass notes on piano and harp are rendered precisely. Spatialization isn't as wide, but it's clearly defined and focus is on texture detail, revealing any slight change in timbre. Even more revealing than K601, although both are very close.

    Hope that helps

Nope, they were never on my list due to reported QC issues.
On the other hand I auditioned HD-800, HD-650, HD-600, LCD-X and LCD-2 in March this year, and that session left me with warm feeling that I chose well - K601 as my main workhorse. :grooves:

What do you mean, they are built by aristocrats in Vienna. Just read on another forum there were some QC issues with their high end headphones, interesting indeed.

    Thanks Andrew.

I don't have the Duet 2, I have the old Duet firewire, my bad, I should have specified. Unfortunately I can not find any more information on the headphone output on this thing other than 30 ohms, according to some random apogee employee, and "high output" as written in the manual. Can't say for sure. I did find random forum posts of people using the HP output on this thing with HD600's. Some say it sucked, needs an amp, other say it's fine. Not much help. In any case, now that I think I figured out how I would connect this thing to an amp, should I need it, I can go ahead and get the HP.

I think it goes something like:
Duet>line selector>monitors/amp>HP or keep plugging and unplugging the monitors with no line selector. The one I found so far https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LS3 is a 120$, damn. Looking to see if I find something else.

Yes, regular 702 and 701 have identical drivers. Not sure about 702 anniversary.

Yes, DT250 - very flat and realistic mids, ATH - loudness effect with attenuated low mids.
