every daw works the same
1 core can handle 1 channel/bus, having dual core or 18 cores does not matter at all if you overload 1 core.
its a good idea to have an eye on the core meters while swapping things around to learn how to spread workload more even.
7700k/7740x is the fastest single core available
todays 8 cores still have plenty single core juice while doubling the core count at the same TDP is a no brainer in most cases for the same price if you go ryzen which i recommend

since the big steps Intel/AMD did now, x99 is ancient technology

 

So far I can say Reaper is still supporting Win 7 so I am here to say. If and when they stop I really might just move to Linux MInt.
The only thing I can say as of now is the Mixer control for my Focusrite pro 40 is kind of confusing on Linux MInt.
Hopefully it will get better or I will just bite the bullet and dig deeper to learn it.

Im really surprised how many people here use win 7 ( i am as well) though its even more surprising to me how many of you aim to stay that way.

Yea, that is why groups and busses are your friends. If you route everything straight to the mixbus or masterbus, you will quickly run out of cpu power.

 

W10 for a while, without any troubles...

 

That makes sense. I don't usually run vocal groups or guitar groups, etc. I am running a drum group, and of course there's the reverb/delay buses. I send them through the master bus ultimately which is routed straight to the 1st 2 outputs on the MOTU. I try to keep routing as simple as possible. Everything used to run to it's own bus when I was running PI plugin for automatic phase correction, but I've since discontinued use of that plugin as it caused some panning issues as it worked.

I own a surface book tho with win10 pro running traktor pro and it freezes after about an hour into the set. So sad.

 

i7 7700K is a beast at single thread and excellent in multi-thread tasks. Best bang for buck from Intel right now. I just recently assembled one audio PC with it. If I was interested in Intel CPUs I would go with that one now.

On the other hand those AMD Ryzen CPUs look really good. I also have AMD Phenom II and think of finally upgrading it, probably next year when this new AMD platform matures a bit. I don't like to be a beta tester. Those 1700X and 1800X CPUs look very tempting! I can't wait to try one! :P

If I had Motu 424 PCI I would try to flog it on e-bay and buy 424 PCIe card. It's less than $300 and possibly even cheaper on e-bay. The thing is, even though there are these PCI to PCIe adapters, I personally wouldn't trust one for audio card. Native PCIe card is surely faster and more efficient.

 

i am sticking with 7 on my desktop. it's solid and, if it ain't broke..
i have a laptop with win10 on which is ok but, as has been mentioned, the updates which you can't switch off and all that rubbish is a f**kin pain. i use that for graphics and the..

 

Windows 10 from day one and works fine with all my DAWs and software. Been brilliant, far better than Windows 7 and the dreaded 8.

 

Man, when i went from a Phenom II to an i5 it was like 10x more capable, number of plugins, vst instruments, its just a whole different world.
Then switched to an i7 and its even better.

 

I think every one of us, hobbist or pro, has everything they need already (or can have access to) to make any kind of music they want
My question is: why change something that isn't broken?

 

pls show PROOF WIN 10 performes better than WIN7, and dont tell me, its loads faster...lol

How is win 8 compared to 7 and 10?

 

I left XP only when they stopped supporting it and I got my new i7-2600 @3.4Ghz (4 cores) Dell box on 64 bit...with 7 Home Premium...I still miss the XP. If they ever made it on 64 bit I would have stuck with XP to this day.

As for Windows 7?...Cubase 6.5 did crash a few times on it, Cubase 7 even worse, skipped Cubase 7.5, Cubase 8 got better, Cubase 8.5 even more so and now Cubase 9 still has to crash yet...

But leaving 7 for 10??? when they stop supporting it yes.
