Can you assess this vocal?

    Hi!
I have 4 questions regarding this vocal (it was recorded in a home studio) :

    https://clyp.it/fnctw3sk#

    Regarding the 1st note:
    1) Does the basic tone (587Hz) resonates in a bad way? or is it too loud?
    2) When I listen to this vocal note carefully, I feel as if the basic tone(587Hz) came from a sinewave rather than from a human voice... Does this vocal sound natural to you?

    Regarding the 2nd note:
    3) Does it have the high-end distorted in a bad way? When I boost the high-end by e.g. 5dB, it sound a bit brutal/artificial to me - and to you?

    4) Generally, how do you assess the quality of the vocal recording? Is it professional? (is it noticeable that it was recorded in a homestudio, not in a professional studio?) I think professional songs don't give an impression that vocal's basic tones sound like a sinewave...

    Best,

The first one is not outside the range of what a human being could do.

The second one sounds modified by some tuning software.

Plus there is no vocal to assess, there is just some AHHHHHHHH HEUGGGGGG, judging as singer based on AAHHHHH and HEUUGGGG is about as daft as picking a builder for you new house based on a sample set of two 2x4s with one nail in them.

I didn't record the vocal myself. I got it from someone.
I'd like to start a discussion about these sinewave/unnatural tones, reasons why recorded voice sounds like a sinewave, and how to avoid mistakes(while recording) that make a vocal have such sinewave tones.

As far as I know, this vocal sample was recorded with a Blue Yeti Pro mic in a homestudio (without any autotune effects).

Can you explain to me what could be the reason why these tones sound like from a sinewave?
I came across numerous vocalists who offer their services to record vocals online, and they had these "sinewave tones" present in their demos.
I wonder if such homestudio vocalists can do anything to prevent their vocals from sounding so poorly?
    Any advices/suggestions?

(I found some vocalists whose voices I like, but they have this problem of "sinewave" tones in their recordings...)

nothing else to say really .. but I favor.. what's the point... a couple notes hanging out in nowhere land?

step up your game chief....if you have to analyze at that level.. you'll never finish anything.. like the rest of us... well most of us :bleh:

not even a starter there... if you need help with your compositions.. I suggest you
consult with @foster911 he can get you on your way...

Blue Yeti Pro mic? that should be more than decent
what the hell, my 10 year old iPhone can do way better recordings than this:boombox:
sounds like everything went wrong !
actually it sounds like some half assed Chinese vocal synth with lofi redux to get the "warmth"

are you serious or is this a joke ?

The room reflections, AD, mic (capsule), preamp, vocalist's timbre/range/style, performance, is going to determine your quality of recording. If all of these boxes are checked, you will have good results immediately. If you use a MONOPRICE mic with hosa cabling going into a soundblaster AD, in room with just a mattress and a desk, then you need to do some more studying up.

Sing into the mic yourself and experiment so you can at least judge your recordings in different scenarios, e.g. proximity, open room closed room (in between 2 big sofa pillows?), whisper, sing, yell, scream, you have to do it to know.

But ultimately, in a perfect world, the AD, mic and preamp is no shit what translates to the speakers. Garbage in, garbage out.

    eh?

here what you do, get a sm57 microphone for 100 bucks.
record the whole song vocal verse yourself.(lyrics, vocals)
use melodyne to modify it to what your looking for.
hire a real singer to perform it for the final recording.(payment can be 6-pack and bucket of chicken(singers have to eat too ya know good deal for 5 min of recording)
finally, ......... stop dicking around with sinewave obsessions homey.

sinewave are not a natural human soundwave, so if you hear or see one its likely not to be a human. the way you talk i would say , time to find another hobby buddy

Once again: I didn't record this file myself. It was a real singer who recorded it using Blue Yeti Pro mic (without using autotune).

I'm absolutely serious here. I'd like professionals on this forum to possibly tell me what a vocalist (whom I'll hire) can do so that his/her vocal recordings don't sound as if they included those unnatural "sinewave-like" tones in them.

Can the reason be too loud singing or too short distance of the vocalist from the mic?

Btw. haven't you encountered tracks e.g. on soundcloud or wherever which have vocals with such unnatural "sinewave-like" tones?

this is amazing, your posts are always either extremely funny or amazing

soundcard ? clipping? bad settings, bad positioning, cables? 1 weak spot in the chain and the recording ends in a mess
actually this mic could be broken
if this person is not an amazing singer, do not hire :guru:

    https://www.looperman.com/acapellas

an amazing resource to find good vocals/singers, there is really an awful lot of stuff going on there.
and most people are fine with just a mention like "featuring"

digging there from time to time, never heard a similar bad recording tbh, and there are many gems to be found
using some of the many search tags its really easy to find someone that fits the project

    just some ideas :winker:
