A good mic and a nice sounding preamp ....

There is not the best Plugin for that in my opinion. There are a lot of great plugins of so many companies to achieve your goal.

Probably Izotope Nectar 2 is the best all in one Channel strip/plugin suits for vocals.

On my vocals mixes are most of the time mixes of ... waves + slate+ lindell + melda production + kush +acustica audio , i could go on and on and on and on ... plugins.

Everything adds a tiny bit to the end sound It really depends what i want to achieve. And what my favourite plugins at this time are. I have "plugins seasons".

Check out lindell channel x - it colours (warmth + silky) and compresses and eqs (crispy).

The true is that mic, comp, preamp etc, all these tools can be good helpers but it's not that important like some people think... Huge different is make by singer's voice. I recorded and mixed hundreds of singers from amateurish to professional and famous singers. I'm telling you if you have a singer with a great voice then you can easily get perfect, beautiful sound, using just basic cheap plugins or even free plugins. On the other hand, if you have the best mics, preamps and plugins and bad singer you'll never get the sound. :)

AT4050 for a mic,Art voice channel works decent, the problem with the above answer about a great voice will do blah blah,is the simple fact that with a shitty mic/converter,your freaking dynamics are ridiculously jumping everywhere......you want the singnal coming in nice and clean, and warm if possible, and remember when your using plugins that your sweet spots sitting at around -12......so make sure your using clip max, clip gain etc and check your levels....

  13. Warm connotes a tone with less high end and favoring the low mids. Use an eq. like...anything you have, maybe BootEQ mkII by Variety of Sound.

Silky connotes a softened high end. Maybe use a saturation plugin. Try Ferric TDS by Variety Of Sound

Crispy can mean a transient shaved signal being run through a transformer, bit reduction or distortion.
Try Sonic Anomaly Transpire for the transients, NUSofting Bit Fluzer for bit reduction and TeslaSE by Variety of Sound.

All these plugins are free and readily available. Best of luck.

A ribbon mic, popfilter and a nice tube-driven preamp.

    good to know
i do not like popfilters, the singer must control their diaphragm at least.
Cheap tube preamps will never be good like a transistor.

I had no idea about this company. Reaper plugs with guis? and free? Thanks for the heads up.

on a related note... for vocals, does anyone think there is any point to using a vocal screen/box behind the mic,
putting your mic in front of a full closet etc..?. all the wacky things you see people doing..

    necessary or no ?

then you see vocalists in a studio ( obviously with whatever treatment they have on walls, room design etc. )
with no such bizarre set ups...just them and a mic.. and maybe a pop filter..

How much money have you got? Because if you want the best, as you say, you may need a lot of money. And I mean a really, really large amount.

I have a mic screen from Sterling Audio and after some fair use, I realized it gave me some weird cancellations. I found a better sounding spot in my room and since then, my mic screen has been sitting in its box.

As for preamps, I asked a very knowledgeable friend what he thought the all-purpose quality preamp was and he suggested Focusrite ISA One. I never could buy it. Now I am very pleased with my UA-4710d, although expensive (by not as much as anything else in its league), you get a lot of character and versatility. I also like the pre of my Apollo Twin paired with UAD Neve 88RS, and it suits better some vocalists. My latest discovery is that the preamp emulation from AA Amethyst3 gives a nice, well-defined, and expensive-sounding character to almost any source.
