I just installed Reaper x64 and using ASIO4ALL I can go as low as <1ms without any effects while monitoring track. But when I add some effects like VST ReaPitch I notice latency and there is some notice in FX window at the bottom saying 8192/8192 spls. That must be added samples? How can I fix this so I lose latency or is it impossible? What does that "spls" mean?

Thanks for any answer, sorry for being so noobish I'm new to this.

I would suggest that you go onto the reaper forums and ask your questions there. Its one of the friendliest and helpful bunch of people there, including the devs, so you will get an accurate answer as well :)

Any kind of VST will add latency.. especially a pitch control VST

In any DAW not just Reaper? And is it always equal amount of latency for all DAW or perhaps some have better code and add less ?

It's pretty comparable..Daw 2 DAW.. Reaper actually, maybe a little less.. but negligible.

If you dont like the latency the best solution for you is to buy an audiointerface with zero latency monitoring..that way you never hear the latency.

also depending on your cpu and audio interface, plugins are more or less efficient,it's not just the daw...
and you mention asio4all, which is a generic asio driver, for better results you need a dedicated driver
(especially made for your audio interface) and no one can do that better than its manufacturer...

SPLS is samples per second. If you are using a 44100 sample rate you are between a 5th or 6th of a second of latency. (44000 divided by 8000, rounded off) A fifth of a second, or 175 miliseconds or so, is quite a bit. Get it down to around 120 and you can deal with it usually. I would say when you see those numbers, you may not be running through ASIO4all. Go to your audio hardware set up and look for a controller. There is usually a way to change latency for ASIO there. I don't use Reaper, but I know it is user friendly and well respected, and would be my next choice if I weren't too lazy to change from what I already know, which is Adobe Audition. And newbies and seemingly dumb questions are respected here. We've all been there.

@Guitarmaniac64: Please don't mislead people into thinking that if your audio interface supports direct ASIO monitoring all latency problems are solved. Direct ASIO monitoring is only for monitoring the *DRY* signal from your audio interface without any latency. If you want to monitor the audio with normal VST/RTAS plugins, there will always be some latency, and you have to turn the direct ASIO monitoring off for that. The only circumstance under which you can monitor the audio with direct ASIO monitoring and FX is if your audio interface have built-in DSP FX, but you're limited only to those FX, of course.

If your operating system and drivers are optimally configured, you can get away with turning off direct ASIO monitoring and using plugins as FX with minimal latencies like 64-128 samples. I can do both, but I prefer TC Konnekt FX and direct ASIO monitoring since TC FX are really good, but sometimes I need to use some plugin, and then it's best to use a plugin that doesn't introduce any additional latencies.

    Cheers!

    Thanks for all replies.

But how come other plugins that come with Reaper, like those JS type (I don't know what JS stands for) add no latency? It feels like something is wrong with that particular vst plugin.

are you talking about latency delay like when you talk into your Mic or play a midi controller and there is a delay time ( Witch A Lower Buffer Size Will Fix ) or are you talking about a higher CPU load when you add a plugin witch some people call latency ( Witch A Higher Buffer Size Will Fix ) :grooves:

If you just used Reaper I'm sure you would know. I'm talking about latency that is added by turning on vst plugin inside Reaper like ReaVerb. CPU utilization is still minimal like 0.1% but spls goes from 0/0 to 16384/16384 shown inside Reaper FX window at the bottom. Basically you get added 16k samples latency. Only some plugins do that I noticed.
