Couldn't agree more. Reminds me of a policy major labels used to impose on unaware newcomer artists, so they could sell their stars easier and effortlessly. They would sign any artist that could pose a threat to their stars, for example all the Mariah Carrey or Whitney Houston wannabes that had the physical potential (look-skill-talent-young age) to "dethrone" Mariah or Whitney when they were selling as hotcakes. Then they would do everything on their part so the newly signed artists have no success whatsoever. Still, signed for 5-10 years depending on the situation, artists couldn't do much but deliver the albums on schedule and pray something in the label policy change, and after realizing in what kind of ratrap they were caught, they would look for a way out of their contract.
Of course the "have your friends close, your enemies closer" major label tactic was abandoned once they realized physical product sales will keep falling and they needed a new way to "sell" their artists and had to cut expenses from anywhere they could.

I have mistakenly sold SSL to Harman. :) That didn't happen and SSL seems to be doing just fine, although they were in trouble and almost shut down at some point and I remember reading about it. I think Peter Gabriel bought it? Anyway, they're doing fine and so is Focusrite, Neve, SPL and Sennheiser. Good.

Yep, Peter Gabriel stepped in and practically saved the company. He was an avid (pun intended) SSL fan and user anyway so he saw something there as explained here:
