I always think its funny how audio trends come and go. It wasn't that long ago when a 320kbps was considered just as good as cd quality... not because of the byte count, but simply because most people wouldn't be able to hear the difference. I know a lot of audiophiles who like to pretend they have golden ears simply because they play around with audio or own a nice hi-fi system, but would fail miserably if you had them try to tell the difference between formats in a blind listening test.

I jumped on FLAC when it was first released but opted for mp3's out of convenience /space limitations, and because a lot of the music I listened to was only digitally released as mp3s. I personally don't mind high res mp3s and will continue to listen to them until there's no longer any support for them. All that being said, AAC looks like the way forward and if you can get better compression at higher quality, at least we wont have to spend any more money on additional hard drive space

Loved my Nakamichi deck... If I could have married it, I would have. Also, recording music back in the 80's and 90's was way more fun. Miss those days.

 

I also miss vinyl, but it's cancerous.

I have a crate full of cassettes from recording the radio..etc., so this topic is relevant to my interests..as I loathe how much space they take up now.. and am also hot on the trail to digitize them efficiently... I want that crate to disappear actually...

I disagree with pretty much most of this. Thank god tape/vinyl are dead (there's no bass in vinyl, they do a low cut on the master to avoid skipping). I keep thousands of songs on my phone. You may only be able to listen to one at a time, but who knows what that will be at any given moment. I don't want to plan out my listening experience. Kills the whole thing.

We must consider that for most people MP3 replaced tape cassettes, so it was a big improvement. Then for many it was good enough to replace CD/FLAC/WAV.

I remember tweaking my double deck Pioneer cassette for recording my "song compilations" from CD's. Metal cassettes, dolby B, even it had a dynamic range measurement of the cassette. Playing the loudest parts of every song before recording them while anxiously staring the 10 bar input volume meter to avoid "analog cassette clipping" lol.

On a technical note, MP3 its part of the MPEG (1) audio standard (layer 3). It was really ahead of its time, given that AAC is MPEG4 audio. And like has been said it only really outperforms MP3 at low bitrates.

MP3 is like JPEG for images. There are betters formats, but good enough for most people. AAC is mostly used because is the audio partner of the H264, winner of the browser media standard war, as we discussed recently. Well, also used at Mac's I think (m4a).

 

I too have memories like that my friend, of the Super 8 Camera and the projector too, although I don't know if it still works.

As for the crate of cassettes, are we talking about 1/4 reel to reel or standard cassette?

Back in the day, my cool aunt's abusive deadbeat stoner boyfriend had an 8-track deck with record capability and he would make tapes for me. I thought he was the coolest dude ever. Turned out he was just an abusive deadbeat stoner.

whichever one he owned is long gone...

 

Ive been looking at Nakamichi products on Ebay. Damn they still hold their price.

But at least he helped you become the resident expert on here. I know I know, It's not much of a consolation, but he could have been an abusive deadbeat that never taught you anything useful!

 

I still have the 8-track cartridges. I also have a recorder for them. I witnessed the fall of cassettes, vinyl, and reel to reel (still have my Sony). I saw the beginning of FM radio. Also witnessed the beginning and end of:

Rock and Roll (yes.....it is barely hanging on)

The Beatles
Motown
Stax
Eisenhower Presidency
JFK in politics
Disco
