I was 15 when after three years of practicing sonatinas, sonatas, etudes at a school of music, I heard a classmate play a boogie on the piano with no sheet to read from. Asking him where he had learned that stuff, which my teacher had never allowed me to play, he said "nowhere, I just listen and then play". He had not even had any lessons! That made me angry, of course. The keyword being "listen"! He said, find out the chords and then play them in your left hand while you play the melody in you right. I had never before heard anything of chords and harmonies, just having played scales and stuff. So I quit music school and sat down to "listen" and try. The first song I was able to play was "Memphis Tennessee", which had only two chords - C and F. By chance and trial and error I discovered G and that I was able to play most songs with just these three basic chords. What I had gained from three years of tedious training was skill with my fingers. Since I and my friends were into Beatles and Stones, we decided to form a band. With the exception of myself and my brother none hadhad any formal training on any instrument. So two taught themselves to play the guitar, my brother took the bass and one played a self-built drumset. And that was it. We all became semi-professionals eventually and financed our university studies by playing chart music, which was great then in the sixties. And we are all still playing for audiences although just for the fun of it.

No phloopy, I already went through the biggest part of my life and made my choices... it is not a problem of uncertainty or indecision.

I don`t regret for a second having chosed music... i believe that it made my life happier.
I regret only that it took too much time away from other things...

That is why I am not sure if it is a good thing to pass it intentionally to Your children...

that fore all the reflection about "Do I have any idea of who I am and what am I doing, to allow myself to influence with my points of view my kids ???

I don`t know... I am more prone to the idea not to feed them any ideas about music until they show some interest themselves, but I am far from certain that this should be the right thing to do.
Best maybe let them made their choices, and start aiding them only when they already made their decisions.

My youngest kid asked me some time ago if it was a good idea considering being a pro musician, and guess what I said:

-Nope! It´s poorly payed, all too much work and a lot of disappointments connected to that business, but play for fun, get better and meet others who loves to play good music!

To me, music is largely both a social thing and communication on a high level. Music has given me so many good moments and a lot of friends for life.

I was asked resently if I would join a new band. I know all the musicians in this new band, they all play extremly well - great guys etc.

I thought for a moment and said: No thanks but Im glad you asked me ;-)

    Here is what I thought:
Rehearsals, the many miles on the roads, gear to be set up and taken down again, bad food, way too much alcohol, really bad beds etc etc .... Im too old for all that ;-)

    Cheers

Great topic man. I read my story when I read Cav Emp storys, so...Mine was in French, but that's about the only difference.

When i was in high school i didn't really like music...well music lessons. At first they tried me on Oboe and i didn't have enough puff to blow down that tiny little reed. Then i was moved to Viola. Sadly though the lessons the class learned the positioning of notes on the strings and neck I was off sick so i spent the rest of the year 'miming' and pretending to play while always trying to sit directly behind the person in front of me so the teacher couldn't see me. Thinking back now I am sure she probably knew but didn't say anything :)

After school though I chose music because it simply makes me feel good..... It stirs my emotions, stirs my imagination and creativity..... and stirs my 'soul'.

I guess some sort of a scientific explanation of what i am saying, and i quote here:

"using magnetic resonance imaging they showed that people listening to pleasurable music had activated brain regions called the limbic and paralimbic areas, which are connected to euphoric reward responses, like those we experience from sex, good food and addictive drugs"

So does this mean i make three trips to the musical buffet and have an orgasmic high every time i write a song? :)..........well yeah kinda but luckily its mostly in private. I almost never write songs while having lunch at a diner with a friend...

Lol yeah..... It's on my bucket list to write a massive Christmas hit and live off the royalties for life. I tried it on here last year with 'Christmas In Creeptown' but i guess that wasn't mainstream enough :)

"Is your full name Harry Von_Steyr?....nice to meet you.... my friends call me Sally. Do you eat here often? Do you get embarrassed easily in public? "

    My father's Framus S-380

He stored it on top of the wardrobe in their bedroom and just grab every other year or so. When I was 16 I couldn't resist anymore and wanted to play...well I was supposed to learn guitar first so I took quite a detour but in the end I had my own bass(es). And in 2015 the circle was closed when I released a song where I used this exact bass.

But that's just the initial thing why I began making music. After I learned the first few chords I immediately began writing songs and it's just so amazing to create music I couldn't live without it.

So you actually want your kid to be a pro musician. Because whatever it is we say as parents to our kids, especially when they reach teen age, eventually they will do the opposite, or at least try to heheheh...

I remember seeing Pink Floyd on tv in 1975 and being mesmerized, it was nothing like the Beatles and Elvis etc i was into up to then (mostly from my dad's collection). My dad, an amateur musician himself but already an almost middle aged guy, he sort of liked the music as it seemed, but was appalled by the look of the band, criticizing and categorizing them as "homeless hippies with no money to buy proper pants", so he asked me, "do you want to be like them?" It was one of the very first times i lied deliberately to my dad... "no dad, no way... "
But deep inside i knew it was all i wanted to be :)

Frank told Dweezil the same thing.. "it'll break your heart.. " So I go with the music choosing you.theory...
same for me... but I never was talented enough to think of it as a career.. amateur is good enough for me..
do it for the love, and accept it probably won't make you rich, or even enough to support your needs..

sure if you're young.. give it your best shot.. go for it.. if you end up married and having kiddies.. well then
sort of necessitates changing your priorities.... but then.. sometimes.. papa is a rolling stone... :winker:
