Now that Windows 10s Creators Update has integrated Dolby Atmos into Windows, is anybody using this to mix/make music?

I am only asking as I know it has a headphone format which actually sounds pretty good, but I have only tried it through Sonarworks into my Audio Technica M50Xs so far. Not sure howit translates to stereo monitor speakers.

Just wondering if it adds anything in terms of creative mixing music in a 7.1 space at all? I know you could do this anyway, but seeing that "3D sound" is the whole point of Dolby Atmos, just wondering if anyone is making use of it in this way or if there's any point?

My point isn't that he doesn't know how to make music. It's that he's creating surround mixes of EDM. Very small market for that. But it's his money and I could care less... so don't get it twisted brother.

Atmos requires spending thousands of dollos on Atmos software to mix in it, because the atmos bitstream is a proprietry spatial based format & there are no free encoders/decoders.

Atmos brings nothing new to 3D audio except market share/prevalence & proprietary technologies. There's also DTS:X which is actually truly object-based.

5.1/7.1 requires spending $0, as it's stream based. Even audacity can do it.

The main point of Atmos is to use HEIGHT. But there's also the VR audio craze going on atm based on ambisonics (dates back to 70s), which you can also do height with, and there are several FREE software suites for this.

I have been mixing in 5.1/7.1 surround SINCE 2012 using Reaper (shareware) & my own custom tools. I can use obscure speaker formats like 7.1height, 9.1fh, and 15.1 to make music in 3D. I'm not using ambisonics due to a a few reasons.

Please tell me more about your obscure speaker settings, not sure if I understand correctly, you mean what for height in your setup 7.1?

How do you encode and decode these formats and where can I find a free encoder/decoder for 5.1 dts or DD?

And there it is folks. Yet another multichannel audio format that barely anybody can afford to do it even right. Thus making my point valid.

    which?

google. Presumably you already have a surround mix.

Well nothing stopping you from mixing in 7.1.4, just that you can't deliver an atmos bitstream. Also, see films in atmos https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Dolby_Atmos_films

    Also, some free methods above.

I would prefer DTS but would accept AC3.
    Free would be nice.

You know "EDM" (which doesn't mean shit, it's a marketing brand) can be 80 tracks projects right? Or are you that kind of guy that keeps bashing things without a minimum of knowledge about the subject?

Is there any relevance to 3D sound outside of cinematic entertainment? Are people implementing it in popular genres of music?

Nope. One day, maybe... That's the dream of many engineers but this kind of system is way too much "rare" in the crowd and hard to implement into basic customers homes, so it's really not profitable most of the time... It exists but it's very rare.

I figured that. It will be cool watching the innovation of this tech implemented into popular music genres. Put on headphones and hear a guy singing a verse like he's standing directly behind you about to tap you on the shoulder..lol
