I have these two monitors and I need to move my "studio" (which is a desk, the monitors and the pc) to another place. I already thought about it and the best place is with the monitors very close to the wall. Monitors are Samson Resolv SE-8. My quick questions are:

- since they have bass ports on the front, it isn't a huge deal putting them close to the wall, right?
- I have another place which would actually be better, but I'd have to place the monitors not only close to the walls, but also to the angles of the room. Is this not suggested at all? It will sound like crap?

As a rule of thumb, you can add 3 dB boost per wall in the lower regions, front ported or not. Ergo wall position = +3dB bass boost, corner position = +6dB bass boost.

 

I was so much happier after I moved my corner desk out of the corner. It had the additional bonus of moving the monitors about 1 1/2 feet from the wall. Bass response got more defined and snappy immediately.

 

fraifikmushi Im sorry, but if the speaker is in the corner should be a 6 db cut (-) instead of boost? The corner make the bass louder, or not? I hava a pair of focal alpha 60 (front ported) on isoacoustic stands , next to a wall and one of them almost in the corner. Now im doubtful

I don't get you, is that not what I'm saying? Boost, and the + sign, means louder in this context.

 

Putting a speaker in a corner or up against a wall will create a bass bump... if the speakers are in either of these positions, cut lows accordingly w the speakers onboard EQ...Understand????????

 

My bad then, I understand the sentence wrong, need to practice more English . Corners are a pain in the ass.

 

Sadly these monitors only have an eq for the highs. I'll try to rearrange the room when I get there and see if I can avoid any corners or wall positions. I thought the front ports would have helped a bit

An inexpensive graphic eq will help you "tame" frequencies" across the entire range and fine tune some of the room's imperfections too. If its a no go for the money, then a free alternative would be a graphic eq plug in your daw's main output as an "always on standard". In the latter case though, everything has to be routed through the computer.

 

That's a great idea I hadn't thought of! I was tone sweeping and did find a few spots that could help with. I created a preset in an eq plugin, but never thought of running my hardware EQ. I could run it through the control room outs, then it shouldn't even affect bounces back into the DAW.

 

Things to remember:

1. Can't fix SBIR with EQing

2. Can't fix reverberation with EQing

3. Putting speakers flushed (or as close as possible) to wall allows for some modes to be moved to more easily treatable frequencies.

4. Port direction is more a question of aesthetic, as long as air can move it doesn't affect sound.

5. Low frequencies move in spherical shape (which is why Subwoofer driver direction is neglible).

Conclusion: It's hard to give advice, so best you try out both positions and see for yourself.
