I liked (and still do like) the movie when I first saw it, even though it starts playing less like a wacky comedy and more like a horrific vision of things to come with repeat viewings. Be wary of anybody who doesn't "get it". ;)

It used to be that we never had to use buttons. Maybe occasionally on certain machines. Mostly there were switches, occasionally buttons, but mostly switches. Buttons were the thing you had on your shirt, not your phone. Buttons on a phone?! Insanity, we thought.

Then buttons started to pop up here and there. Our microwaves and TVs no longer had dials, they had buttons. The rotaries on our phones were now number pads made up of buttons. We were amazed. Buttons on a phone? Insanity. Buttons started to appear anywhere and everywhere. Everything had a button.

Then the buttons disappeared and in their place were virtual buttons. They weren't real, but their image was displayed on a screen, and they worked like buttons when you pressed the screen, but buttons they were not. Soon these virtual buttons did a lot of heavy lifting for us, despite not even being real. Just press a not real button and a real dinner will arrive at your home. Press a not real button and find a real ride! The big, fake buttons were pushing more smaller, real buttons for us! Buttons, real or fake, were the best.

Before too long we found ourselves not leaving the house, just hitting buttons when we needed things. Buttons delivered us our groceries, which weren't groceries at all but little button sized pills that you put in the Nuclearoven Buttonmaster X, hit a button, and BOOM, a buttonburger with a side of buttons. Living the life of the button was great. Long live the button!

Not too long after that we found ourselves sitting in a high chair with one giant button in front of us, and we weren't thinking too clearly by then (probably too many buttonbeers to go with those buttonburgers), but we were pretty sure this button was real, whatever real was. What we did know was the power of the button. And we banged our head against the button, and good things happened. And we banged some more on that one big button, and the button loved us. And we continued to bang the button until our heads, which were previously woozy, woozy since as far back as we could remember, which was about 4 minutes, became even woozier, and we hit the button with our head again, not really thinking it help would us, (we weren't sure what thinking or help was anymore), but just doing it for the sake of doing it, because that's what we did, we banged buttons When nothing happened we hit the button again... nothing. And then again, and again, but still nothing. And then again, and again, and again, before the button broke and everything went black...

    good read...

Like many of you have noted... this film is more like a possible reality then a "dumb" movie.

Well, much like my post, it's based on some slippery slope logic. But, of course, that's the point: exaggeration.

In reality, both the movie and my silly story ignore the huge gains we've made in raising the collective consciousness regarding human rights and environmentalism, especially in the western democracies, and even in the United States. If we were able to see things not only from wider perspective, but one over a longer period of time, I think those of us who seek a world that embraces diversity and egalitarianism and seeks to find a more just balance of wealth distribution might feel a bit more positive than we currently do.

A quick note about the U.S.: just as important as fixing the ills of our society is the recognition of the ills of other societies and the role the U.S. has played in those ills. Some of that is just now bubbling up through various media outlets, much to my amazement. So there is still hope yet that the American people that enjoy more freedom than any other people, yet are somewhat inexplicably clueless as to what those freedoms have cost others, will awaken from their stupor and demand not just for a better life for themselves, but for the entire world. Just maybe... !

Edit: Thanks for the kind words, by the way. It's an idea that I've had for awhile, though I've never written it down. Many more versions to come, I'm sure (just like the 45 edits I did to the above)

    Stupid movie, precious meanings.
In a serious way would be as prophetic as Orwel or Huxley

    Well, not for everyone indeed...

p.s.Serious way explanation: Black Mirror S01E02

"Black Mirror" is an incredible series. The episode you're referring to is the one with the "X-Factor"-esque show and the treadmills, right? That was probably one of the greatest dystopian stories I've ever read or seen ... probably because we as a society are maybe fifty years away from something that looks just like it. I'd say IDIOCRACY edges it out, only because it was a little more epic in scope and Judge attempted to make the message a little easier to swallow with humor (though not enough humor, apparently, since 20th Century Fox tried to bury it as much as possible when it was released).

I still can't decide if this movie is about the de-evolution of society or about the hopelessly average white guy who thinks he's the smartest person on the planet. Hell, maybe it's both :)

edit: spotted the hopelessly average white guy
