I consider "Blow by Blow" one of those albums that changed music.

  3. I gotta throw in Michael Hedges to the mix and turn on those that have never heard him play. He played acoustic guitars in many curious tunings and is the one who inspired me to do so also. This show at the Bottom Line was killer. I saw this show and you can see me sitting in the audience at 1:35 as the camera swings to the right. I got to meet him after the show as my friend was a Japanese journalist interviewing him for a few magazines. They loved him in Japan. He died in a car crash at the age of almost 44. That sucks.

Man this is hard!! Tone - to me - is almost more important than technique. When a guitarist has "tone" he can play one note and say more in that one note than any wanker could say in an entire album of shred. that said, technical ability has its place too. Most people pick their fav guitarist based on the song IMO & not on the guitarist. I'm going to attempt to list my favorites based solely on tone. so I'd have to say in no particular order
    1. BB King
    2. Dave Gilmour
    3. Duane Allman
Honorable mention not based on tone

    1. Page - really my personal fav
    2. Hendrix
    3. SRV

Wait, no love for Guthrie Govan here?

Picking just three is a very hard task, but if I'm really forced to...

    Gary Moore (RIP):

    Andy Timmons:

I find it very hard to top these three beasts. If I was talking strictly metal guitarists (which is a genre I'm the most familiar with), I'd say:

    Jeff Loomis
    Dimebag Darrell
    Marty Friedman

totally cool version of this one, heard of this guy before.. but I think the first I can recall hearing one of his performances..
so revealing to hear a guy with just an acoustic guitar sometimes, even as simple as it is..you can really savor the sounds..
exploiting the wonderful possibilities of hollow body wood and steel..

p.s. Super in all his glory.. where can i get one of those hats? :bleh:

Earlier this year I took my gf and 2 friends to see the Jimi Hendrix Experience concert that was touring the Hard Rock casinos. A star studded guitar player tribute to the late and great Jimi. A good friend of mine gifted me with 4 comp tickets from his casino host, front and center.
Eric Johnson, Billy Cox, Buddy Guy, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Zak Wylde, Jonny Lang, Dweezil Zappa, Chris Layton, Mato Nanji, Noah Hunt, Keb' Mo', Henri Brown, and Scott Nelson. You should have seen all the stacks/rigs that were on the stage, a guitarists wet dream. It was a great show with all of them swapping in and out of the songs they covered with 3 to 4 guitarist at a time. As well as a solo spot for each one individually and even some really good 2 bar tandems. All of them were playing on stage for the finale. You should have heard the last note of the last song, the crescendo. You know the one Im talking about.

And I have to say the playing style that blew me away the most was Eric Johnson, not only can he shred but there's so much feeling and emotion in his playing style. Dont get me wrong, I love Zak Wylde as well, he is a shred master but that's all he does.
The best performance was definitely Buddy Guy. He knows how to work the crowd and he really does tell the story with his guitar.
I like and can respect all different playing styles from jazz and blues to neoclassical and technical death metal.
But Eric Johnson live is a treat not to be missed.

You guys and gals forgot the most underrated gtr player of all time and ( in my opinion of course ) one of the best I ever heard...

Another you missed is the evergreen Buck Dharma, a true underrated legend from 60s to 2000s ( he is still alive and he is still good on the six strings )

My fave one is Jimi ( he has no equal, no matter how good your tecnique is, nobody from this world can reach his intensity and feeling )

    @BroKill.

Gave the mighty Eddie Hazel a shout a bit further up. Might dig out some early Funkadelic later and float downstream with Maggot Brain.

Well. Not being a guitarist, I'm going to upset everyone and choose a bass guitarist. Always loved this melodic sound.
    Jean-Jacques Burnel

    As for lead
    Angus Young
    Steve Stevens
