Do i really need to block warez from calling home?

I've never had a problem with cracked plugins calling home or anything and i don't even have a firewall active on my mac but everyone recommends using little snitch to block your daw and plugins from calling home. But is this really necessary? I've been using cracked plugins and daw for a while now as i can't afford the official versions but never run into any issues?

Well, unless you dont mind the plugs logging your ip into their developers sites.

What issues could arise from that?

The potential is for legal action - by them, against you. It's intellectual-property theft, right?

I don't know how serious a threat that is; it's probably very small, but it's always there and is absolutely possible.

One practical reason to block is to prevent software updating itself - to an uncracked version. And why not block it anyway? Better to block every goddamn thing? Who knows what a crack is doing in addition to cracking a plugin? It could be doing anything?

Why would you not use a firewall? At least take the obvious cursory efforts at security? It isn't difficult to maliciously scan IP ranges for open ports - so why not close them?

Thank you for the info, so if i purchased an app like little snitch i'd only need to block the outgoing connections from my DAW or do i need to block every individual plug in?

Also can't i just use the default mac firewall in system preferences? what's the benefits of little snitch? thanks again :)

The default one should be fine, certainly better than nothing. I've no experience of Macs, but presumably the firewall is configurable. The default or recommended settings should be fine, but ideally you would only want to allow net traffic that is essential for whatever your needs are.

Id avoid running your daw whilst your internet connection is on..
In simple terms disable your wifi not only to avoid plugs callin home "which i come across quite often"
But also to free up your cpu resources...
Runnin a daw whilst online "unless your following a tutorial or something like that" is a no no..
Blocking cracked plugs is a must if your gonna be online while runnin any daw...

I mean if you can install and run a cracked DAW you can run Little Snitch and as for everything nobody forces you to do it. If you are satisfied with how things are going, don't change

    Tapping in to that..
.. How would I do that when plugs only have dll's? Is it possible with the Win Firewall, or do I need something like Glasswire?

Well me personally i dont bother to block the plugs that call home, because i dont use my daws while online.
But i hear little snitch does the job as loads of guys here have suggested "or similar software"
As for the onboard firewall settings in windows " as far as im aware yes you can use the windows firewall"
But im unsure just how effective it is or i guess people wouldnt run aftermaket programs such as little snitch to do so..
Even if the reality of it is that theres little if no chance of reprocussions "despite being logged into the software manufacturer".
I wouldnt like to tempt fate certainly not when the solution is so simple
Im not saying that i think that if i have a plug call home on me that im gonna get into Trouble over it .
"though sometimes the plug calling home gets blocked so you gotta erase all trace on your system to reinstall"
Because i used to go online and trigger the call quite often. "not purposefully of course"
And while no nothing bad has happened i stopped risking it because ultimatley there are horror stories out there and why risk it unnesesseraly.

It's easy to test, I did it months back before going fully offline. I have process hacker installed on my windows 7 os. If you run your daw and you are online you can see with process hacker all the outgoing connection that come from evey running applications...And well the daw activity is insane to all kind adresses you really don't want your daw to go. You unplug you internet connection, or block it whatever, and no more crazy activities.
It's pretty easy to be offline even with a simple freebie firewall or onboard firewall (both on windows and mac, but learn how to use it, it's vital), I also use the firewall included in my cablebox when you block traffic there it's blocked period and you still access easily to your own network if you have several builds like I do, the safest way to go and even if you're all legit, like I am for most of my plugs, you don't want you daw and plugs sending informations about what you are doing to god knows who for god knows what reason.
Privacy isn't something overrated, it's not just a matter of getting caught using cracked plugs.

Serving 5 years for cracked plugs "on what planet" nahhhh!
You get less for murder these days
Then again times are changing and people get banged up for ridiculous shit these days so i wouldnt be too surprised but i highly dought it.
And while its rare i do know of one or two guys over the last 10 years that got a huge fine
" payment will be enforcable if your are caught downloading cracked software again"
Or something like that i forget the intricacies of it all as it was some time ago

So while its a rarity, it does indeed happen and isnt just an old wifes tale
