well here is my first sharing on AS.

This is my remix of "Let's Push Things Forward" by The Streets

The original was massive success in the UK (and maybe other places?) way back in 2002 and is still a dance floor filler today.

My remix was started in 2012 (hence the shameless dubstep bit), i recently revived it and replaced a few stock synths with Serum and the like, but largely it is as it was in 2012. it was intentionally supposed to be as rigid as a robot, 0% swing/shuffle. i thought that would suite the style of the remix. maybe that was a mistake, what do you think? also what genre is this? lol i actually don't know!

The acapella is a slightly noisy, delay ridden mp3. the rest of the track is barely mixed beyond composition, and so is suitably messy to match the vocals.
panning, eq, compressing and a few sparkles here and there are definitely needed.

feel free to be as brutal (but helpful) as you like, but do bear in mind i haven't access to anything remotely decent to monitor this on. (trashed sennheisers and laptop speakers!)

Snare needs just a little bit of corrective EQ, upper mid section.

The original is nice, but it sounds oldschool (specially the rythmic part), your take on it gives it life and in a very actual way (and I say that as a good thing, modern music has progressed on many aspects).
Your rythmic is strong imo, it's a straight beat yes, but dense enought to be groovy, there are a lot of elements but everything goes through, that's good, I don't know about your monitoring equipement but despite the challenge it constitutes you've managed to do something really nice there. I like the bubbly (and the keys in the backgound at the end of the beat) things we can clearly hear on your intro and outro, it's really in the spirit of the beat, tripping !
Nice work on sound design/preset choosing in serum, the lead very "reaggeay", your bass, your wobble bass (nice dubstep vibe there indeed), I really think it's all in the right tone, it's the right color.
Mix can always be reworked, no big deal it's pretty nice balanced already alltogether.

talmi this response made my day. honestly it had been a terrible day for me, and i decided to upload this (despite fears of being crucified for a bad sounding remix) just because i thought nothing could get any worse. honestly you and von steyr's positive comments have really picked me up. i'm sure i will upload more tracks now

I'd never heard this song before but I remember hearing a few remixes of The Streets growing up. Either way having only heard the remix first and then heard the original, I guess I can see what it is you were trying to do. This is absolutely fantastic though, seems repetitive at certain points with that reggae-esque organ lick but I suppose that's a stylistic choice. I can't judge on the mixing since I'm listening on these laptop speakers but composition wise its definitely fantastic, you got a lot of really interesting things going on stylistically. I suppose if I was doing it. I would have made the verse and chorus stuff stand out a little more, perhaps been a little more intentional and crazy with the genre switches. Maybe gone from 2-step garage (garrij lol) to 4x4 stuff to Dubstep stuff but I love doing shit like that within single compositions. All that being said all totally stylistic choices, great job. I really dig it, especially the part where you break up the monotony of the organs a little bit and add some riddim-esque flavor in there =D

At first I thought the acapella seemed misalligned a bit but also I suppose it's supposed to sound that way =P

 

I gotta say The Streets were visionaries in terms of hipsters making fun of hipster culture more than a decade ago =P

This is nice work man. I like the mellowed out vibe of the beat. I especially dig the part that comes in around 2:25

Lots of little things in here that I just notice out of the blue and go "oh shit that's pretty cool"



P.S. I hate the rapping, but you didn't do that part

sorry for the late reply. my monitoring situation wasn't as bad as i initially made out - if i cast my mind back to when i started this remix i had a nice TC Electronic Desktop Konnekt 6 and a pair of Yamaha HS80m monitors. the room i was in was reasonable but prone to a fair bit of twangy reverberation, i got used to it! since then and having moved a few times i am in a tiny apartment, with those nice bits of gear in storage waiting to used again. i hope to get them out soon!
nowadays and at the finish of the remix, i only have my battered trusty old sennheiser hd 25s. they have been through the wars and are prone to a nice sounding but unhelpful distortion, but at low volumes and once again with getting used to it, it isn't so bad.

i genuinely do a lot of basic track constructing just out my laptop speakers. they aren't so bad when bass isn't needed and sometimes excel at highlighting glaring issues in an individual track if you have become too used to nice monitor sound
(i also often kill the kick and bass for hours at a time and try to work on the track without them. we all have our quirks)

part of my motivation to finish this remix was that i knew this style of UK rapping would grind your gears.... us musicians find drive from the strangest of places!
